ICC Wins EU’s Top Rights Prize as Trump Targets Court Over Gaza Warrant

THE HAGUE: The International Criminal Court has won the European Union’s top human rights award, the Sakharov Prize, Dawn reported, in a show of support as the court faces sanctions from the United States.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the award on Thursday. ICC President Tomoko Akane thanked the parliament for standing with the court “at a time when the Court and its officials face unprecedented challenges”.

ICC Sakharov Prize: why it matters

The prize is a direct response to the pressure campaign by the Trump administration, which has vowed to dismantle the court “brick by brick” over the arrest warrant it issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in connection with the Gaza war.

The decision was announced in Strasbourg, where lawmakers framed the award as a defence of the rules-based international order at a moment when multilateral institutions face open hostility from Washington.

The European Union is now considering a “blocking statute” that would shield the court and European entities from the effects of US sanctions. The measure would bar compliance with the American measures inside the EU.

The other finalists for this year’s prize were Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu and Iranian twins Taraneh and Romina Rahimi. The award ceremony will be held in December.

What is the Sakharov Prize?

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is the European Union’s highest tribute to human rights work, named after Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov. Past laureates include Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafzai. Awarding it to an institution under active sanctions is an unusually political choice, and it signals that Brussels intends to defend the court rather than distance itself from it.

A court under pressure

The ICC has been in Washington’s crosshairs since it pursued the Netanyahu warrant. The Trump administration has sanctioned court officials and pressed allies to limit cooperation with The Hague. The court’s supporters argue that the sanctions threaten the independence of international justice. Its critics say the court overstepped its jurisdiction.

For Pakistan, the development is being watched in the context of a shifting global order. Islamabad has engaged in recent high-level diplomacy with world powers, and regional mediation efforts continue. Pakistan has also taken public positions on recent Middle East flashpoints, including condemning the Houthi attack on a Madinah power station, while Turkiye’s foreign minister has been shuttling through the region.

What happens next

The December ceremony will put the court back in the spotlight. The more consequential question is whether the EU follows through on the blocking statute, which would set up a direct legal clash with Washington over the court’s future.
