Pakistan ID Card: CNIC Types, Fees and Application Guide

The Pakistan ID card — the CNIC — is the single most important document in a citizen’s life. It opens bank accounts, registers SIMs, gets you a passport and proves who you are at every government counter. This guide explains the types of cards NADRA issues, what each costs in 2026, and how to get one.

Quick answer: Pakistan’s ID card is the CNIC issued by NADRA — available as a standard CNIC or a chip-based Smart NIC. First-time cards are free at 18 (Normal); renewal in 2026 costs Rs 750/1,500/2,500 (Smart NIC) or Rs 400/1,150/2,150 (standard) for Normal/Urgent/Executive processing. Apply via the Pak-ID app, id.nadra.gov.pk, or any NADRA centre.

Types of ID Cards

NADRA issues several identity documents, and the names confuse people:

  • CNIC (Computerised National Identity Card) — the standard card for citizens resident in Pakistan.
  • Smart NIC / SNIC — the chip-embedded upgrade with encrypted data, faster verification at banks, airports and telecom outlets, and support for future digital services.
  • NICOP — National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis, for citizens living abroad.
  • POC — Pakistan Origin Card, for foreign nationals of Pakistani origin.
  • FRC — Family Registration Certificate, a family-composition document (not an ID card). See our FRC guide.

Most residents choose the Smart NIC for its security and durability. Our CNIC vs Smart card comparison breaks down the differences.

2026 Fees

Renewal and re-issuance fees depend on card type and speed. Smart NIC: Rs 750 (Normal, ~30 days), Rs 1,500 (Urgent, ~15 days), Rs 2,500 (Executive, ~7 days). Standard CNIC: Rs 400/1,150/2,150. The first-ever CNIC at age 18 is free in the Normal category. Full tables are in our Pak Identity pillar guide.

How to Get One

Three routes: the Pak-ID app, the id.nadra.gov.pk portal, or a walk-in NADRA Registration Centre. Online routes handle renewal, modification and reprint; first-time applicants must visit a centre for biometric capture. The online application walkthrough covers the process end to end.

What It Is Used For

Your CNIC is required for banking, SIM registration, passports, voting, property transactions, tax filing and government services. An expired CNIC can freeze bank accounts and block SIMs — renew before it lapses.

What is the difference between CNIC and Smart card?

The Smart NIC (SNIC) has an embedded microchip storing encrypted personal data for faster, more secure verification. The standard CNIC has no chip. Both are valid identity documents.

How long is a CNIC valid?

CNICs carry an expiry date printed on the card — typically 10 years for adults. Renew before expiry to avoid service disruptions.

Can I hold both a CNIC and a NICOP?

No — you hold one or the other depending on residence. Overseas Pakistanis get NICOPs; on permanent return, NADRA converts it back.
