Pakistan summons Indian envoy over killing of two civilians near Kasur border
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan summoned India’s charge d’affaires to the Foreign Office on Saturday to lodge a strong protest over the killing of two Pakistani civilians by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel near the Kasur border a day earlier.
The diplomatic demarche followed Friday’s firing in the Bedian sector along the international border, in which two men were shot dead and a third was wounded. The Foreign Office said the BSF had used “unprovoked lethal force” against unarmed civilians, calling the action “wholly unjustified and grossly disproportionate”.
Pakistan summons Indian envoy: what the Foreign Office said
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Foreign Office said the Indian diplomat was told that the incident amounted to a “serious violation” of fundamental human rights, including the right to life, and raised serious concerns about the protection of civilian life under international law.
Pakistan also categorically rejected any attempt to describe the dead men as “infiltrators”, the statement said.
The Indian side was called upon to conduct an immediate, transparent and credible investigation into the incident, take appropriate disciplinary and legal action against those found responsible, and formally communicate the findings and action taken to the Government of Pakistan.
India was further urged to respect international law and the bilateral arrangements governing the border, exercise maximum restraint in such situations and take effective measures to prevent a recurrence.
The Kasur border firing
According to security sources cited by Radio Pakistan and Geo News, the three civilians belonged to Ladhar village. The sources said the men had moved only a few steps beyond a border pillar when BSF personnel opened fire without warning.
All three were unarmed, and none had attempted to cross the border fence, the sources said. The deceased were identified as Azmat Rasool Shah and Mohsin Jutt, both residents of Jattan Wali Haveli in Ladhar. The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment.
Security sources described the firing as a violation of the arrangements and standard operating procedures governing the international border.
The incident adds to the strain in Pakistan-India ties. The two sides have traded sharp words in recent weeks, and the protest comes a day after the civilian deaths were first reported on Friday evening.
