The language of the news
Why Urdu News Dominates Pakistan
The national language sets the national news agenda.
Urdu is Pakistan’s national language — understood across all four provinces — while English remains an official language used mainly by the elite press. That is why the country’s biggest news audiences are Urdu audiences: the top TV talk shows, the most-watched bulletins and the highest-circulation dailies are all in Urdu. English outlets like Dawn (founded 1941 by Muhammad Ali Jinnah), The News and the Express Tribune matter enormously to policymakers, but the national conversation — the one that trends, that WhatsApp forwards, that moves votes — happens in Urdu.
The press
Major Urdu Newspapers
The dailies that have shaped Pakistan’s mornings for generations.
Daily Jang
Founded 1939 by Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman; Pakistan’s largest-circulation Urdu daily, published from Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Multan and Peshawar.
Daily Express
The Express media group’s Urdu flagship — one of the country’s biggest dailies with editions across Pakistan.
Nawa-i-Waqt
Founded 1940 by Hameed Nizami; the historic Lahore daily of the Pakistan Movement era, still publishing.
Roznama Dunya
The Urdu daily of the Dunya media group, strong in Punjab with a large national footprint.
Daily Aaj & Ausaf
Established regional voices — Aaj from Peshawar and Ausaf from Islamabad — with loyal readerships.
Jasarat & Ummat
Karachi-based dailies with distinct editorial identities and decades of publication history.
On air, around the clock
Urdu TV News Channels
The channels behind the “breaking news” tickers.
Pakistan’s private TV news era began when Geo News launched in 2002, and the dial has been crowded ever since. The major Urdu news channels today include Geo News, ARY News, Dunya News, Samaa TV, Express News, 92 News, Hum News, Bol News, Aaj News and GNN, alongside the state broadcaster PTV News. Broadcast media is regulated by PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority). Each channel runs a website and YouTube stream — Samaa’s Urdu digital operation (urdu.samaa.tv) and Geo’s Urdu site are among the most-visited news sites in the country.
Prime time (roughly 8–11 PM) belongs to the talk shows, where the day’s politics is argued over; the morning shows set the agenda. If you want one habit: watch one full bulletin from a channel you trust, then cross-check the top stories against a second outlet.
Beyond TV and print
Websites, Apps and Social Media
Where Pakistan actually reads the news now.
Every major outlet runs a website and app: jang.com.pk, express.pk (Express Urdu), dunyanews.tv, arynews.tv, samaa.tv, humnews.pk and others publish Urdu news online around the clock, most of it free. YouTube has become a primary news platform — channels livestream bulletins and publish clips within minutes. WhatsApp and Facebook groups move news fastest of all, which is precisely why they are also where most fake news starts. Treat anything that arrives as a forward as unverified until a named outlet confirms it.
Local news
City News: Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad
National outlets, local editions — how to follow your city.
Karachi
Pakistan’s media capital — most channels and dailies are headquartered here. City pages of Jang, Express and the channels’ Karachi bureaus cover everything from traffic to town politics.
Lahore
The heart of Punjab’s media — Nawa-i-Waqt’s home city, with strong bureau networks for every national outlet and a buzzing local press.
Islamabad
The political news capital — parliament, the presidency and the courts make it the centre of political reporting; PTV News broadcasts from here.
Don’t forward fiction
How to Verify Breaking News
Five checks before you share anything.
- Two-source rule: a story is only as real as its second confirmation. If only one obscure page carries it, wait.
- Check the outlet’s own site: fake screenshots of “Geo” or “ARY” graphics circulate constantly — open the channel’s verified website or YouTube instead.
- Look for the byline and time: real breaking news names a reporter and carries a timestamp; forwards have neither.
- Beware the old-video trick: most viral “breaking” clips are old footage from a different event or country — reverse-image search takes seconds.
- Official accounts: for government announcements, the relevant ministry’s or spokesperson’s verified account is the primary source.
