You do not need a paid app to silence spam calls. Both iPhone and Android ship with free built-in filters. They block most robocalls before your phone ever rings.
Silence Unknown Callers on iPhone
iPhone can send every unknown number straight to voicemail. On recent iOS versions, go to Settings, then Apps, then Phone, then Screen Unknown Callers. Choose the Silence option.
On older iOS versions, the path is shorter. Go to Settings, then Phone, and turn on Silence Unknown Callers. Calls from unsaved numbers skip the ring and land in voicemail.
Your contacts still ring through normally. In addition, the caller can leave a message, so real callers are not lost. Only silent scammers give up and move on.
For example, this stops the classic spoofed-number robocall cold. However, save important numbers first. Doctors, schools, and delivery services should be in your contacts.
Filter Spam Calls on Android
Android’s Phone app has a built-in spam filter. Open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu, then Settings, then Caller ID and Spam. Turn on See Caller ID and Spam, then turn on Filter Spam Calls.
Google keeps a constantly updated database of flagged numbers. Confirmed spam calls get rejected silently. Suspected spam shows a warning label on the incoming call screen.
Samsung phones add a second layer. Open the Phone app, go to Settings, and turn on Caller ID and Spam Protection. Then switch on Block Spam and Scam Calls. Two filters now guard your phone at once.
Pixel owners get Call Screen as well. It answers suspicious calls for you and asks the caller to state their reason. Meanwhile, you read the live transcript and decide whether to pick up.
Add Carrier Filters and Smart Habits
Most carriers offer free spam protection. Turn on your carrier’s call filter in their app or settings. This blocks many scam calls at the network level.
Block and report numbers that slip through. On both platforms, open recent calls, tap the number, and choose Block or Report Spam. As a result, your filter learns and improves over time.
Never press buttons or speak on a robocall. Pressing “9 to opt out” only confirms your number is live. Instead, hang up immediately and block the number.
Finally, consider the Do Not Call registry in your country. It stops honest telemarketers, though scammers ignore it. Indeed, device filters plus carrier protection together cut spam by over 90 percent.
