THE Rankings 2027: No Pakistani University Makes the World’s Top 500

Pakistan has 56 universities in the THE Rankings 2027, but not one of them broke into the world’s top 500, according to the latest edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings published on Tuesday.

Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad is the country’s highest-placed institution, sitting in the 551-600 band. It is followed by the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in the 601-650 band and COMSATS University Islamabad in the 651-700 band.

Pakistan’s top performers in THE Rankings 2027

The 2027 edition gives Pakistan its widest-ever presence in the rankings, with 108 institutions represented overall, including those holding “Reporter” status. Of these, 56 received official ranked positions. The leading Pakistani placements are:

551-600Quaid-i-Azam University
601-650NUST
651-700COMSATS University Islamabad
701-800Bahauddin Zakariya University, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, University of Lahore
801-1000University of the Punjab, LUMS, Air University, GIK Institute, GCU Lahore, GCU Faisalabad, International Islamic University Islamabad

Further down the table, institutions including the University of Peshawar, UET Lahore, Bahria University, the University of Karachi, Dow University of Health Sciences, NED University and Khyber Medical University appear across the 1001-2000 bands.

Why Pakistan is missing from the top 500

The gap is not about the number of universities taking part. Pakistan’s representation keeps growing, yet none of its institutions has crossed into the top tier. The rankings judge universities on teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry engagement, and the shortfall is sharpest in research quality.

Publication counts have risen at Pakistani universities, but papers need strong citation impact and placement in respected journals to move the needle. Funding is the other constraint: laboratories, specialist equipment, digital resources and faculty development all demand sustained investment, and limited budgets make it hard to build the research capacity the top 500 requires.

International exposure matters too. Leading universities draw overseas students, foreign faculty and cross-border research partners. Pakistani institutions still have considerable room to grow on that front, and stronger industry links could open up patents, commercial research and knowledge transfer.

How the world leaders fared in THE Rankings 2027

The global picture underlines how far Pakistan has to climb. Oxford held first place for the 11th consecutive year, with MIT second. Princeton and Stanford share third, followed by Cambridge in fifth, Harvard sixth, Caltech seventh and Imperial College London eighth. UC Berkeley and Yale share ninth.

Asia’s rise continued. China placed 17 universities in the global top 200, led by Tsinghua at 11th and Peking University at 13th. The University of Tokyo ranked 27th and Kyoto University joint 62nd. Malaysia’s University of Malaya entered the top 200 for the first time, taking joint 194th place.

For Pakistan, the next challenge is clear: the priority is no longer getting more universities onto the list, but lifting the strongest ones much higher on it. Higher-impact research, better citation performance and deeper international partnerships are the levers that matter, alongside reforms such as the shift to online paper checking already under way in Punjab’s examination boards.
