Why does Pakistan celebrate Independence Day on 14 August when India celebrates on 15 August? Was it always the 14th? What is the Islamic date of independence? And what about “13 August”? This page answers all of it.
Quick answer: Pakistan celebrates on 14 August because Lord Mountbatten conducted Pakistan’s transfer-of-power ceremony in Karachi on 14 August 1947 (before flying to Delhi for India’s 15 August ceremony), the date coincided with 27 Ramadan — Laylat al-Qadr — and a 1948 cabinet decision formally fixed 14 August as Independence Day.
The four reasons
1. Mountbatten’s schedule. The last Viceroy had to be present at both transfers of power. He did Pakistan’s in Karachi on 14 August 1947, then India’s at midnight in Delhi on 15 August. Pakistan kept the date of its own ceremony.
2. 27 Ramadan. The night of 14–15 August 1947 was the 27th of Ramadan 1366 AH — the eve of Laylat al-Qadr, the holiest night of the Islamic year. The coincidence gave 14 August a spiritual weight no committee could have planned.
3. The cabinet’s decision. Jinnah’s famous radio address actually called 15 August “the birthday of the independent and sovereign state of Pakistan.” But at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan, the date was advanced to 14 August with Jinnah’s approval. Pakistan’s first commemorative stamp (1948) still bore the old 15 August date.
4. The 30-minute theory. Indian Standard Time is 30 minutes ahead of Pakistan Standard Time — so at the moment of India’s midnight independence on 15 August IST, it was still 11:30pm on 14 August in Pakistan.
The Islamic date
The Islamic (Hijri) date of Pakistan’s independence is 27 Ramadan 1366 AH. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the Hijri anniversary of independence moves through the Gregorian calendar each year — which is why Pakistan’s national celebration stays fixed to 14 August.
What about 13 August?
Pakistan’s Independence Day is on 14 August, not 13 August. The confusion comes from the celebrations: fireworks, flag-hoisting rallies, concerts and street festivities begin on the night of 13 August — the eve of the holiday — so many people associate the 13th with the festivities. The national holiday, the official ceremonies and the televised addresses are all on 14 August.
Why is Pakistan’s Independence Day one day before India’s?
Because Pakistan’s transfer-of-power ceremony was held in Karachi on 14 August 1947 while India’s was at midnight on 15 August in Delhi — Mountbatten attended both, a day apart.
What is the Islamic date of Pakistan’s independence?
27 Ramadan 1366 AH — the eve of Laylat al-Qadr.
Is Independence Day on 13 August in Pakistan?
No — it is on 14 August. Celebrations begin on the night of 13 August, which is why some people say “13 August”.
