EA Shuts Down BioWare, Cancels New Mass Effect in 400-Job Restructure
Electronic Arts is closing BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and cutting around 400 jobs across the company. The news that EA shuts BioWare came in an email to staff on Wednesday, and it marks the end of one of the most respected names in role-playing games.
EA said it would cancel an early-stage Mass Effect project and close BioWare’s studio in Edmonton, Canada. About 50 of the 400 job cuts, roughly three per cent of EA’s total workforce, will fall on BioWare itself, Bloomberg News reported, citing a person familiar with the plans.
Why EA shuts BioWare now
The closure is part of a wider reset. EA said it would concentrate on fewer large-scale action-adventure games, while continuing development of Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi title. The team behind the skateboarding game skate. will be restructured into a smaller studio, and affected staff will be helped to find other roles inside the publisher.
The timing is no accident. EA was taken private in August in a $55 billion deal led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners. Analysts had widely expected cost cuts to follow a buyout of that size, and they arrived within months.
BioWare’s recent record made it vulnerable. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, released last year after a long and troubled development, fell well short of EA’s sales expectations, games press reported. Mass Effect: Andromeda had a difficult launch, and the live-service shooter Anthem, which pulled the single-player specialist out of its comfort zone, was a commercial failure that shut down earlier this year.
A legendary studio says goodbye
In a statement on X, BioWare struck a farewell tone. “After more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing, and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending,” the studio wrote.
“There is nothing easy about writing those words. Our focus right now is on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games, and supporting one another through this transition,” it added. “These games became so much more because you played them, debated your choices, fell in love with the characters, and made these worlds your own.”
Founded in 1995 by doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk in Alberta, Canada, BioWare built its name on Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights before creating original worlds with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. EA bought the studio in 2007 for $860 million.
What the BioWare closure means for gamers in Pakistan
For Pakistani readers, the Saudi angle is the one to watch. The Public Investment Fund’s lead role in the $55 billion EA buyout places one of gaming’s biggest publishers under part-Saudi ownership, at a time when Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are deepening ties across defence and investment — Islamabad recently signed the Badr defence cooperation pact with Riyadh, Doha, Ankara and Jakarta.
The cuts also fit a wider pattern across the tech industry. Meta suspended sharing on its Muse AI chats this week over a privacy flaw, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT advertising to Pakistan, and Anthropic disclosed an $80.7 billion first-half loss ahead of a planned listing. Big tech is spending heavily and cutting sharply at the same time, and gaming is not exempt.
