UAE Issuing 30,000 Visas to Pakistanis Every Month
ISLAMABAD: The trajectory of Pakistan-UAE ties has returned to its decade-old pattern, with the number of visas issued online to Pakistani nationals resuming its old pace, diplomatic sources said on Thursday.
Highly placed sources said that on average, about 30,000 visas are being issued by the UAE government to Pakistani nationals every month, while travel agents are availing the facility in addition to this number.
The sources recalled that 2.2 million Pakistanis are currently working in the UAE, one of the largest expatriate workforces in the Gulf, whose earnings form a pillar of Pakistan’s economy.
The deportation episode closes
Sources said Pakistanis deported from the UAE were involved in offences related to the war in the region and aggression against the UAE. The UAE government, taking a lenient view, did not consign them to prison or try them in courts, but asked them to leave the country.
The number of those deported over recent months was about 3,500. The sources said Pakistani immigrants had now “fully comprehended the sensitivity of the matter”, and that no Pakistani had been forced to leave the UAE in recent weeks.
New ambassador credited for turnaround
The sources noted that the new UAE ambassador, Salem Mohammed Al Zaabi, had played a constructive role in improving ties between the two brotherly countries. Pakistan and the UAE maintain a long-standing strategic, economic and cultural partnership dating back to the UAE’s establishment in 1971.
Trade between the two nations hovers around $8 billion, spanning energy, consumer goods and real estate investments.
Remittances: the economic backbone
Pakistanis send billions of dollars in yearly remittances that support Pakistan’s economy. The scale of that lifeline is visible in our own live figures: Finance Minister Aurangzeb has projected annual remittances of $44 billion as the country shifts from aid to trade, and Roshan Digital Account inflows have crossed $14 billion, a channel built precisely for overseas Pakistanis.
The visa resumption also fits a wider pattern of Gulf mobility opening up this month: the 8th Pak-Oman Joint Ministerial Commission agreed to visa exemption for holders of diplomatic, special, official and service passports, while a Pakistani worker was executed in Saudi Arabia for drug smuggling, a reminder of how much is at stake for the millions of Pakistanis earning their living in the Gulf.
