Rybakina Wins Ningbo Open Title in 73 Minutes

Elena Rybakina won the Ningbo Open title on Sunday with a ruthless straight-sets victory over Leylah Fernandez in the final. The world number one cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win in just 73 minutes to retain the trophy she won last year.

The win gave Rybakina her fourth title of an outstanding season and the 15th WTA crown of her career. It also took her a long way towards securing the year-end number-one ranking.

Rybakina dominates the Ningbo Open title match

Rybakina, the top seed and defending champion, broke Fernandez early and never looked back. She struck a superb two-handed crosscourt backhand winner to move 4-2 ahead in the opening set, then sealed it to love in under 40 minutes.

Fernandez, the world number 30 from Canada, was looking for her second title in as many months after winning the Singapore Open. But Rybakina broke her again to lead 2-1 in the second set, held off two break points in the fourth game, and then broke once more for 5-2 before sealing the match on her first championship point with a searing forehand.

She thanked the crowd for the atmosphere, said it gave her motivation and energy, and called a second win in Ningbo special.

Fernandez was gracious in defeat. “I’d like to congratulate Elena for a wonderful week and a wonderful year,” the 24-year-old said. “We’re having a good end of year. We’ve just got to keep going and keep working hard.”

A season to remember

Rybakina’s season already included the Australian Open and US Open titles before she arrived in Ningbo. The Ningbo crown is her first trophy since reaching the top of the world rankings, and it caps a comeback from a foot injury that forced her to miss the Wuhan Open earlier this month.

Her path to the title ran through the semi-finals, where Feature Pakistan earlier reported on Rybakina beating Shnaider to reach the Ningbo final. The final proved far more one-sided, with Fernandez unable to find an answer to Rybakina’s power from the baseline.

The result also keeps the WTA Finals race firmly in focus. Rybakina now turns her attention to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo this week before the season-ending WTA Finals next month, where she will defend her title.

What the win means

The manner of the victory matters as much as the trophy. Rybakina lost just four games against a player who had won a title weeks earlier, and she did it in 73 minutes. That kind of dominance at the top of the rankings sends a clear message to her rivals before the season finale.

For tennis fans in Pakistan, the result adds another chapter to a busy weekend of sport, which also saw Taylor Fritz reach the Lyon final, covered in our report on Fritz facing Musetti in the Lyon title match. Elsewhere, Yuri Yoshida claimed her maiden LPGA title in South Korea, while Katie Boulter reclaimed the British number one ranking with her Japan Open comeback.

How many titles has Rybakina won this season?

Four. The Ningbo Open title is her fourth title of the season and the 15th WTA crown of her career.

Who did Rybakina beat in the Ningbo final?

Leylah Fernandez of Canada, the world number 30, beaten 6-2, 6-2 in 73 minutes.

What comes next for Rybakina?

She plays the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo this week, then heads to the season-ending WTA Finals next month.
