NADRA Assistant Director Killed in Peshawar
NADRA assistant director Fahad Khan was shot dead near the authority’s office in Peshawar on Friday, while on his way to duty.
The victim was Fahad Khan, son of Sharoom and a resident of Kafur Dheri. He was killed behind the NADRA office in Phase 5, Hayatabad, within the jurisdiction of Hayatabad Police Station.
Peshawar police spokesperson Alam Khan confirmed the killing. He said police reached the scene at once after receiving word of the incident.
NADRA assistant director: what police said
Police recovered eight spent cartridges of a 30-bore pistol from the scene. The body was shifted to a hospital for a post-mortem examination.
A comprehensive investigation is under way to establish the circumstances of the killing and trace those responsible, the spokesperson said. No arrests had been reported by the time the police statement was issued, and no group had claimed the attack.
NADRA runs the national identity card system, and its offices handle citizens’ most sensitive personal records. The killing of an officer on his way to work at a government office in a busy part of Hayatabad will raise fresh questions about security for public servants in the provincial capital.
A violent week for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
The killing comes at the end of a violent week in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, much of it aimed at the polio vaccination campaign now under way across the country. On Tuesday, two policemen guarding a polio team were killed in Mohmand district, and another was injured, when unidentified gunmen attacked the team. One attacker was also injured in the incident.
On Wednesday, a polio campaign supervisor, Jalil Khan, was abducted by unidentified armed men from the Chapri area of Jamrud during the seven-day vaccination drive. A heavy police contingent was sent to the area, and blockades went up on key routes in an effort to recover him.
Earlier in the week, four polio workers were abducted after gunfire in the village of Jious, in the Sheikh Attar union council of Tank district. The gunmen took all four to an undisclosed location. In a separate incident, two members of a polio team were abducted in the Azam Warsak area of Lower South Waziristan. Sources said armed men linked to the proscribed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan were allegedly involved, but both workers were later released.
The campaign itself is one of the largest of the year. More than six million children were reached in Punjab in the first three days, and teams are still working to reach children missed in earlier rounds. The drive faces the same risks in other provinces, and stray dogs have threatened the campaign in Sindh as well.
The violence sits inside a wider security strain in the province. Joint military training has stepped up in the same districts, and Pakistan and Tajikistan concluded the Dosti-III counter-terrorism exercise at Cherat in Nowshera on Friday. The province’s politics are unsettled too, with local government elections suspended in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
NADRA’s own work touches almost every household in the country. Citizens who need a replacement card can follow the guide to replacing a duplicate CNIC, which sets out the documents and the fee.
What happens next
Police have the cartridges and the scene, but little else in public so far. The investigation will need to establish whether Fahad Khan was targeted for his job, for a personal dispute, or as part of the wider pattern of attacks on government workers in the province.
Hayatabad is one of Peshawar’s largest residential areas, and a killing in daylight near a government office will put pressure on police to show progress fast. Until arrests follow, NADRA staff and other public servants in the city will be watching the case closely.
