The Exact Figure: 881,913 km²
The figure 881,913 square kilometres is the total area used by Wikipedia’s Pakistan article and most current international references. It counts every territory administered by Pakistan:
- The four provinces: Punjab (205,344 km²), Sindh (140,914 km²), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with merged districts (101,741 km²) and Balochistan (347,190 km²)
- Islamabad Capital Territory (906 km²)
- Azad Jammu & Kashmir (13,297 km²)
- Gilgit-Baltistan (72,971 km²)
In square miles this is 340,509 sq mi. On this measure Pakistan is the 33rd-largest country in the world — see our world ranking guide for where it sits between Venezuela and Namibia.
The PBS Figure: 796,095 km²
The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics — the source behind the census, the Economic Survey and every official yearbook — reports Pakistan’s area as 796,095 km². This figure covers the four provinces, the federal capital and the former tribal areas, and it is the area used for official population density calculations (about 273.8 people per km² on the 2023 census count of 241.5 million).
The arithmetic is exact: 347,190 (Balochistan) + 205,344 (Punjab) + 140,914 (Sindh) + 74,521 (KP) + 27,220 (former FATA, merged into KP in 2018) + 906 (Islamabad) = 796,095 km². Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are administered separately and counted separately.
The Older 803,940 km² Figure
The 803,940 km² figure comes from older editions of the CIA World Factbook and is still repeated in exam guides, quiz books and older encyclopaedias. It is not wrong so much as outdated — it dates from an era when the administered Kashmir territories were counted differently. If your textbook says 803,940, you now know where that number came from.
Which Figure Should You Use?
- International context, Wikipedia-style answers, general knowledge: use 881,913 km².
- Pakistani government statistics, census data, CSS/PMS exams citing PBS: use 796,095 km² — and mention it excludes AJK and GB.
- Quoting an old textbook: expect 803,940 km² and know it is the dated figure.
