Swiatek Beats Frech in All-Polish Battle to Reach Wuhan Open Round of 16

WUHAN: Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek launched her Wuhan Open campaign with a 6-2, 6-1 win over compatriot Magdalena Frech in an all-Polish battle on Wednesday, advancing to the round of 16.

The seventh seed needed one hour and 42 minutes to get past lucky loser Frech, posting her 40th victory of the season. The Swiatek Wuhan Open run keeps her on course for a potential quarter-final showdown with top seed and three-time Wuhan winner Aryna Sabalenka.

“We know each other pretty well, so I just wanted to focus on being consistent and playing as good as possible,” Swiatek said of Frech. “I know she is running to every ball always and sometimes using the power of the opponent, so I wanted to not play too crazy but play solid and I’m happy that I did that,” said Swiatek, who is chasing a qualification spot for the year-end WTA Finals.

Swiatek Wuhan Open win sealed after tight first set

Despite the lopsided scoreline, the opening set was a genuine test. Frech broke early to lead 2-0, and the set stretched beyond an hour as Swiatek was forced to save seven of eight break points. The former world number one finally took the lead on her fourth set point.

Once the first set was secured, Swiatek shifted through the gears. Upping the pressure with her relentless forehand, she claimed a tenth game in a row to build a 4-0 advantage in the second set. Frech briefly broke back to halt the run, but Swiatek closed out the match without further trouble.

Swiatek will face one of two lucky losers, Lanlana Tararudee or Ashlyn Krueger, in the round of 16.

WTA Finals race adds edge

Every win in Wuhan carries extra weight for Swiatek, who is chasing one of the remaining qualification spots for the year-end WTA Finals. A deep run in China would strengthen her position, and a quarter-final meeting with Sabalenka, the tournament’s most successful player with three titles, would be an early test of her form.

Elsewhere in Wuhan, British world number 170 Sonay Kartal, who missed six months this year with a spinal stress fracture, upset ninth-seeded Belinda Bencic 6-0, 7-5 to book a date with Jasmine Paolini or Nikola Bartunkova. The Tribune reported the result via AFP.
