Maj Fida Muhammad Shaheed: Remembering a 1965 Hero

A Soldier of the Armoured Corps

Long before the wars of the new century, the officers of the Pakistan Army stood their posts with the same devotion seen today. Major Fida Muhammad Shaheed, an officer of 11 Cavalry, was one of them. On 27 May 1965, he embraced martyrdom in an accident while performing his duties in the field.

The year 1965 would soon become one of the most storied in the Army’s history, as war broke out that September. Major Fida Muhammad did not live to see those battles, but he served in the same regiment, among the same brotherhood of tankmen, who would cover themselves in glory only months later.

Duty Without Fanfare

There is a quiet heroism in simply doing one’s duty, day after day, in the field and far from home. Major Fida Muhammad Shaheed gave his life in that quiet service, and the nation honours him for it.

Remembering the Sacrifice

His shahadat anniversary is observed every year on 27 May. Sixty-one years have passed, but his name remains in the honoured record of the Pakistan Army.

Major Fida Muhammad Shaheed served faithfully and fell in the line of duty. Sixty-one years have not erased his name, and they never will. Pakistan honours its soldier.
