Mike Ditka, legendary Bears coach and Hall of Fame tight end, dies at 86

Mike Ditka dies at 86. The Hall of Fame tight end who became the most recognisable coach in Chicago Bears history and led the 1985 team to the franchise’s only Super Bowl title passed away on Friday. His family announced the death in a statement and said no cause of death would be disclosed.

The statement read: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka.” It added that while the world knew him as a Hall of Fame player, legendary coach and leader of the Bears’ Super Bowl XX championship team, his family knew him as the heart of their family.

The news was first reported publicly by Jarrett Payton, the son of Bears great Walter Payton, on Chicago sports radio station 104.3 The Score on Friday.

A tight end who changed the position

Drafted fifth overall by the Bears in 1961 out of the University of Pittsburgh, Ditka won Rookie of the Year and became the first tight end in NFL history to record 1,000 receiving yards in a season. A five-time Pro Bowl selection, he played for Chicago from 1961 to 1966 before spells with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. He won the 1963 NFL championship with the Bears and Super Bowl VI with Dallas. In 1988, he became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As a player, he carried the nickname “Iron Mike”.

The ’85 Bears and “Da Coach”

George Halas hired Ditka as Bears head coach in 1982, and he led the club for 11 seasons. His 1985 side went 15-1 and beat the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX, the only Super Bowl triumph in franchise history. The team recorded a rap video, “The Super Bowl Shuffle”, three months before the game, and its brash characters made it one of the most famous sides ever assembled. Ditka was twice named NFL Coach of the Year, in 1985 and 1988, and left Chicago after the 1992 season. He later coached the New Orleans Saints from 1997 to 1999. In 2013, the Bears retired his No. 89 jersey, the last the franchise has retired.

Mike Ditka dies: tributes pour in

Current Bears head coach Ben Johnson paid tribute on Friday: “As far as I’m concerned, Coach Ditka is the gold standard. He’s a legend around here – as a player, as a coach. His impact is still being felt to this day. It’s a sad day.”

After coaching, Ditka built a second career as a restaurateur, pitchman and television analyst with NBC and ESPN, and became a vocal advocate for better medical and retirement benefits for former players. His thick moustache, sweater vest and fiery sideline manner made him the inspiration for the “Da Bears” fans on Saturday Night Live. His death comes weeks after Matt Suhey, the fullback on the 1985 championship team, died over the Labor Day weekend.
