Punjab launches Rs5 billion interest-free pink salt loan scheme
The pink salt loan scheme launched by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is the province’s first Pink Salt Value Addition Financing Scheme, offering interest-free loans of up to Rs5 billion for businesses processing, packaging and marketing Pakistani pink salt.
At the launch ceremony, Maryam distributed cheques among 10 businesspersons and encouraged them to develop branded products for international markets instead of relying on raw salt exports.
How the pink salt loan scheme works
According to a briefing by Mines and Minerals Minister Sher Ali Gorchani and Secretary Minerals Parvez Butt, the scheme has an allocation of Rs5 billion. The provincial government will cover Rs1.456 billion in interest costs to keep the financing interest-free.
Maryam said Pakistan should capture more value from its salt resources through processing, branding and marketing. She also pledged support for young entrepreneurs and startups seeking access to overseas markets.
Processing zone and export ambitions
The government has established a 110-acre Pink Salt Processing Unit in Quaidabad as a specialised industrial cluster. The planned Pink Salt Mineral Processing Zone is expected to accommodate 200 value-addition units and generate more than 10,000 jobs.
A model retail outlet has also been established to promote processed pink salt products and demonstrate branding, packaging and marketing opportunities.
Officials estimated that developing value-added products could increase annual exports by up to $300 million. Loan recipients welcomed the scheme, describing it as an important step toward developing the pink salt industry.
Why pink salt matters to Punjab’s economy
Pakistan holds some of the world’s largest rock salt deposits, with the Khewra mines in Punjab among the most famous. For years, most of the salt has left the country in raw form, only to be processed, packaged and sold abroad under foreign brands at far higher prices.
The new scheme is designed to reverse that pattern by financing the processing and branding capacity inside Pakistan. If the Quaidabad cluster and the planned processing zone deliver on their targets, the province hopes to keep more of the value chain — and the jobs — at home.
