The race covered 42.195 kilometres through all five boroughs of New York, from Staten Island through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx, before finishing in Central Park. Pakistani runners from Karachi, Multan and Islamabad joined diaspora athletes based in the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway and other countries.

New York Marathon Pakistani runners: the leading finishers

Mukaty clocked two hours, 53 minutes and 42 seconds to emerge as the fastest among the Pakistani runners. His race-tracker splits showed a consistent performance on a demanding course. He completed the opening five kilometres in 20 minutes and 44 seconds, reached 10 kilometres in 40 minutes and 32 seconds, and crossed the half-marathon mark in 1 hour, 25 minutes and 25 seconds.

He reached the 20-mile checkpoint in 2 hours and 12 minutes, passed 40 kilometres in 2 hours, 44 minutes and 31 seconds, and finished in 2:53:42. His second half took about 1 hour, 28 minutes and 17 seconds, a difference of roughly two minutes and 52 seconds from his first half.

Shah came close to breaking the three-hour barrier with a finish of 3:01:37. Multan’s Fahd Mukhtar completed the race in 3:16:23, while Jamal Shah, a Pakistani runner based in Cincinnati, finished in 3:23:25. Brooklyn-based Bsherri Anjum recorded a time of 3:35:05.

Dr Safdar Ali Sheikh finished in 3:52:53, followed by Junaid in 3:53:07 and New York-based Jihan Khan in 3:53:34. Aamar Butt finished in 4:00:45, while Afnan Ahmed recorded 4:01:32 and Danish Raza 4:01:34.

Two Six Star journeys completed

One of the major highlights of the event was the achievement of Shah and Junaid, who completed their collection of all six Abbott World Marathon Majors medals. The Six Star journey requires runners to complete marathons in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York.

That distinction reflects years of training, travel and preparation across some of the world’s most prominent marathon events. Shah had aimed for a sub-three-hour finish in New York, and his 3:01:37 left him just over a minute outside that target. Junaid, who was also targeting the milestone, crossed the line in 3:53:07.

The contingent brought together runners from diverse sporting and professional backgrounds, including experienced marathoners, endurance athletes, medical professionals and working people balancing training with careers and family responsibilities. Several participants were returning to the New York City Marathon after previous appearances, while others took on the iconic race for the first time.

For Pakistan’s runners, the event provided a chance to represent their country and communities on an international sporting platform while pursuing personal milestones. The completion of the Six Star journey by Shah and Junaid, alongside Mukaty’s sub-three-hour performance, highlighted the growing appeal of marathon running among Pakistanis at home and abroad.
