11 Killed, 33 Injured in Pakpattan Bus Accident

Eleven people were killed and 33 injured in the Pakpattan bus accident on Thursday, when a passenger bus collided with a truck on Depalpur Road near Pakpattan.

The bus was travelling from Multan to Kasur when it hit the truck near the 17 SP Stop, a Rescue 1122 spokesperson said. The impact overturned the bus and left passengers trapped in the wreckage.

Rescue teams reached the scene with heavy machinery, including cranes, to free those trapped inside. The dead and injured were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Pakpattan, where an emergency was declared and extra doctors and medical staff were called in.

Among those killed were a Rescue 1122 official and personnel from the Para Force and the Punjab Highway Patrol, officials said. The dead also included a patrolling police official.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz sought a report on the accident and directed the district administration to provide the best possible medical care to the injured. She also expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

On her instructions, Pakpattan Deputy Commissioner Asif Raza reached the hospital to oversee the treatment of the injured. District Police Officer Javed Iqbal also visited the accident site.

Rescue operation under way

The rescue operation continued into the night as workers used cranes to clear the wreckage and search for trapped passengers. The exact cause of the collision has not yet been determined, and officials have not said when a formal inquiry will begin.

The district administration said the injured were receiving treatment at the hospital, and several were in a serious condition. The names of the victims had not been released by the time this report was filed.

Other reports described the truck as a trailer carrying potatoes. The bus was travelling from Multan, and the crash took place on a busy intercity route used by passenger traffic between southern and central Punjab.

The Pakpattan bus accident and a wider road safety problem

The crash is the latest in a series of fatal road accidents in Punjab. In October alone, Rescue 1122 reported 44,797 road traffic accidents across the province, leaving at least 464 people dead and 23,543 seriously injured.

Motorcycles were involved in nearly one-third of those accidents. Lahore recorded the highest number of crashes, with 7,874 incidents, followed by Multan with 2,838 and Faisalabad with 2,615.

Feature Pakistan reported in October that 464 people were killed in Punjab road crashes during the month. In a separate incident on the M-4 motorway near Faisalabad, five people died and eight were injured in a collision.

Earlier this month, three members of a family died in a road crash in Toba Tek Singh. Lahore has also suspended driving licences and permits after fatal crashes.

Road accidents remain common in Punjab. Experts often link them to rash driving, rising vehicle ownership and weak pedestrian infrastructure. Thursday’s crash has again raised questions about road planning and public safety in the province.

The Tribune reported the accident, and the figures were also confirmed by Aaj News and ARY News.
