Asif Sees Plot for Punjab Alternative Arrangement
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that federal minister Chaudhry Salik Hussain’s corruption allegations against the Punjab government are part of an effort to set the ground for a Punjab alternative arrangement. He said the aim was to discredit the current leadership so that a fresh team could be presented in its place.
Asif made the remarks on ARY News programme *Khabar – Mohammad Malick Ke Saath!* on Thursday. He was asked about an earlier statement in which he had suggested that Salik’s allegations could be “part of some future political agenda” to target Maryam Nawaz’s government.
“This statement was given selectively against Punjab. Corruption is prevalent everywhere in Pakistan. […] I have tweeted about it many times,” Asif said.
He went further during the programme. “There is an attempt to create an alternative arrangement — to discredit incumbent people so that a fresh team can be presented. Whoever is behind this, that is what I was signalling to. Please do not ask me anything more than this; I can share my personal assessment.”
The Punjab alternative arrangement claim
Asif also pointed to wealthy figures he described as “carpetbaggers”, active for six to eight months in anticipation of a “political crisis”. Asked whether the plan was Punjab-specific or nationwide, he said: “No, no. Some people are positioning themselves behind it; it is not something that is happening across the country.” He added that his reading was a personal assessment and the plan could be dropped.
The anchor also raised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s reported closeness to the Chaudhry family, and asked if it was a factor for concern. Asif said it could be. “It is not impossible, […] they are pursuing their own interests. They believe that perhaps after two years, when the elections are held, […] they could become part of a new group,” he said.
What Salik said about the Punjab government
Salik, a Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader and the federal minister for overseas Pakistanis, made the allegations during a talk show on a private television channel on Monday. He praised former Punjab chief minister and his uncle Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, and criticised the provincial administration headed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. He alleged that he regularly heard complaints of corruption.
He also questioned lavish government spending, in particular the use of an official aircraft. He said public representatives should remain mindful of the country’s economic difficulties.
His remarks carry weight because of the split inside the Chaudhry family. Salik is the younger son of PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain. After the ouster of Imran Khan’s government in 2022, Elahi and his son Moonis Elahi aligned with the PTI, while the Shujaat family stood with the Sharifs.
The defamation notice and the row so far
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Maryam said she had sent a Rs5 billion defamation notice to Salik, demanding that he retract his remarks. She claimed his anger stemmed from neither corruption nor progress. The issue, she said, was that she had changed the deputy commissioner of Gujrat a few days earlier, whereas Salik wanted a deputy commissioner of his choice appointed.
Salik responded that he stood by his statement. He said he had responded honestly to a question during the interview.
The exchange has now drawn in senior figures from both sides. Khawaja Asif had already questioned Salik’s claims earlier in the week, and the war of words between the PML-N and the PML-Q has deepened since the legal notice. Shafay Hussain, meanwhile, has stood by Salik in the row.
Asif’s latest remarks take the row in a new direction. He has framed it as the early stage of a political plan, not a routine exchange of allegations. Whether that plan exists remains his personal assessment, and he declined to name anyone. Maryam Nawaz has kept the Punjab administration’s focus on governance, directing district officers to visit colleges across the province this week.
What happens next
Neither side has shown any sign of backing down. Salik has refused to retract his remarks, and Maryam has pressed ahead with her defamation notice. Asif’s claim will now be tested against events in Punjab in the weeks ahead.
