DRAP cracks down on illegal online medicine sales in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan has taken strict action against illegal online medicine sales Pakistan. It has raised concern over the growing trend of selling and advertising medicines through websites and social media without approval.

DRAP has asked the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to block websites and social media pages involved in wrong medicine sales. It has also identified several online platforms that continue to sell medicines without authorization.

Officials said they have found cases where smuggled medicines enter the market through online channels. They added that some drugs come from India and Iran. They warned that illegal medicine sales create serious risks for public health.

The regulator also highlighted that prescription medicines are being promoted without medical supervision. It said advertisements for weight loss, sexual health, and mental health drugs are spreading online. As a result, more people rely on self-medication.

DRAP stated that illegal online sales of medicines violate national drug laws. It warned that unregistered medicines can cause severe side effects and life-threatening health issues.

The authority said it will take strict legal action against violators. It will impose fines, seize illegal stock, and start criminal proceedings where required.

DRAP also made prior approval mandatory for all medicine advertisements. It said no company can promote or sell drugs online without official clearance.

In addition, DRAP urged PTA to work with social media companies to remove illegal ads quickly. It stressed that cooperation is needed to stop illegal online medicine sales Pakistan across digital platforms.

Authorities also warned the public to avoid buying medicines from unverified online sources. They said self-medication without medical advice can be dangerous.
