Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught nine passes for 150 yards and a touchdown as the Seattle Seahawks beat the Kansas City Chiefs 20-3 on Sunday night in Seattle. Seahawks end Chiefs unbeaten run in decisive fashion, handing the Chiefs their first loss of the season.
Emanuel Wilson rushed for 100 yards and a score for the hosts. Wilson had 24 carries, including a 21-yard touchdown run around the left end with 3:47 remaining, which sealed the win for the defending Super Bowl champions.
Seattle opened the scoring through Jason Myers, who kicked a 25-yard field goal with 8:22 left in the second quarter. Smith-Njigba then scored on a 28-yard strike from Sam Darnold with 1:44 left in the first half, giving Seattle a 10-0 lead. The play was first ruled out of bounds inside the 1-yard line, but a video review found the ball had crossed the goal line.
Seahawks end Chiefs unbeaten run: how the game unfolded
Seattle took the second-half kickoff and Myers made a 35-yard field goal to stretch the lead to 13-0. The Chiefs’ only score came on a 50-yard field goal by Harrison Butker with 1:42 left in the third quarter.
Darnold completed 20 of 28 passes for 257 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, for Seattle, who improved to 4-3 for the season. Myers added a second field goal in the second quarter, and Wilson’s late touchdown run closed out the scoring.
Patrick Mahomes was 19 of 33 for 165 yards with one interception for Kansas City, who fell to 5-1. Tight end Travis Kelce had four receptions for 44 yards. The Chiefs managed just 213 yards of total offence, against Seattle’s 410 yards.
The drive that set up Smith-Njigba’s touchdown started after safety Ty Okada intercepted a Mahomes pass. Kansas City went three-and-out on the next possession, giving the ball back to Seattle with 1:16 left in the half. Seattle reached the Kansas City 2-yard line before cornerback Nohl Williams intercepted a pass in the back of the end zone and returned it to the Seattle 44.
Butker was short on a 58-yard attempt on the final play of the half, leaving the score at 10-0.
A reunion that went Seattle’s way
The game carried an extra edge because of Kenneth Walker III. The NFL rushing leader was the most valuable player of Seattle’s 29-13 Super Bowl victory against New England, before signing with Kansas City as a free agent in the off-season.
On Sunday night, Walker was held to 36 yards on 14 carries by his old team. It was a quiet night for a player who had arrived in Seattle as the league’s rushing leader, and it summed up Kansas City’s problems on offence.
For Seattle, the win was a statement. The defending champions had started the season at 3-3, and a home win against an unbeaten side, built on defence and a strong running game, will lift belief in the camp. For Kansas City, the loss ends the unbeaten start, but at 5-1 the Chiefs remain well placed. The concern for them will be an offence that produced only one field goal and 213 yards against a Seattle defence that was ready for it.
The result was reported by Geo Super, based on Reuters reporting.
