Saudi Postpones ‘Davos in the Desert’ Investor Conference to 2027

Saudi Arabia has officially postponed its flagship investment conference to 2027, according to a Dawn/Reuters report, after repeated Houthi missile and drone attacks rattled the kingdom and forced Western executives to reconsider travel to Riyadh.

The organisers confirmed on Monday that the Future Investment Initiative, or FII, will not go ahead as planned from October 26 to 29. The new dates for the Saudi FII postponed edition will be announced very soon, and current registrations and partnerships will remain valid.

From in-person scrapping to full postponement

The confirmation caps a day of confusion around the event. Reuters reported earlier on Monday, citing four sources familiar with the matter, that in-person attendance had been scrapped and organisers were weighing whether to hold the gathering virtually or postpone it. By evening, the FII Institute confirmed the postponement in an official statement.

FII Institute CEO Dr Maha Bint Mishari Al Saud said the decision came from a deep commitment to partners, members, speakers and delegates. She said the landmark tenth edition must deliver the full scale and extraordinary quality the event’s community expects.

The gathering, informally dubbed “Davos in the desert”, has become a must-attend event for some of the world’s top financiers. Set for its tenth edition, it showcases the kingdom’s ambitious investment plans and its drive to attract the billions of dollars needed to fund its economic transformation away from hydrocarbons toward tourism, sports and technology. Draft programmes listed expected speakers including the chief executives of Goldman Sachs, Standard Chartered and Citi, with BlackRock’s Larry Fink and JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon also expected.

Houthi attacks forced Riyadh’s hand

The postponement shows how directly the widening Middle East conflict is now hitting Saudi Arabia’s economic ambitions. Wall Street executives had already begun reconsidering their trips, with some bankers at JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup cancelling meetings and consulting security teams about risks to hotels and landmarks around the conference.

Aviation data underlined the disruption. More than 45 per cent of flight departures from Saudi airports have been cancelled since October 8, according to analytics firm Cirium. Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport has been a repeated target of Houthi attacks, and Aaj English TV reported that it suspended operations earlier this month after a strike killed 13 people, the deadliest attack on the kingdom in more than a decade. On Monday, Saudi civil defence briefly warned Riyadh residents of a hostile aerial threat before sounding the all-clear.

What the Saudi FII postponed decision means for Pakistan

The fallout matters for Pakistan. The kingdom is home to one of the largest Pakistani worker communities in the world, and Islamabad has tied its own security and economic interests closely to Riyadh this year. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia recently concluded a mutual defence pact, and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has publicly called Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia unacceptable.

At the Global Security Forum in Doha on Monday, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi highlighted Pakistan’s mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, saying Islamabad had made every possible effort to reduce tensions and “never gave up”. Pakistan is also seeking a 15-year Saudi oil facility, a request that sits in the shadow of the same regional instability. Meanwhile, Brent crude slipped by more than a dollar to about $108 a barrel on Monday after settling at its highest level since May, as investors weighed the conflict’s impact on supply.
