The Punjab Environment Department has continued its anti-smog guns operation across Lahore, deploying the machinery at pollution hotspots identified through air quality monitoring and ground conditions.

The operation is being run under the supervision of Director General Environment Abdullah Nayyar Sheikh, on the directions of Punjab Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb. Field teams are monitoring conditions across the city and moving the machines to the areas that need them most.

A data-driven deployment

The department says it is using a data-driven approach rather than a fixed rota. Anti-smog guns are placed on a priority basis where higher pollution readings are recorded, particularly at locations with elevated PM10 levels.

PM10 refers to coarse particulate matter, particles with a diameter of 10 micrometres or less. These particles come from dust, construction work, road traffic and other sources, and they can irritate the eyes, nose and lungs.

“The deployment of anti-smog guns is being linked with field monitoring so that the available machinery can be utilised where it is most needed,” the director general said.

The guns spray a fine mist of water into the air. The aim is to settle dust and coarse particles close to the ground, reducing the amount that people breathe in at street level. They do not remove fine PM2.5 particles from the air, and they are not a substitute for cutting emissions at source.

Why the timing matters

The redeployment comes just after Lahore recorded some of the worst air quality in the world. On Friday, the city topped the live ranking of major cities on the IQAir monitoring platform, with readings in the hazardous range. Dunya News reported an index reading of 344 for the city, with Iqbal Town recording 535, while Geo News carried the same Friday ranking.

That context explains the urgency in the department’s approach. When readings climb that high, doctors advise residents to wear masks outdoors, avoid outdoor exercise and keep windows closed. The anti-smog guns are one of the few tools that can be moved quickly to a hotspot on a given day.

Lahore’s smog season typically runs through the cooler months, when still air traps pollutants close to the ground. Crop residue smoke, vehicle exhaust, industrial fumes and construction dust combine in that period, and the problem returns each year.

Feature Pakistan has previously reported on ozone pollution over Lahore, a reminder that the city’s air problems are not limited to visible smog. The anti-smog operation addresses dust at street level, but the wider pollution burden needs action on emissions, transport and industry as well.

What residents should do

People in Lahore should treat smog days as a health issue, not just a visibility problem. Children, older people and anyone with asthma or heart disease face the highest risk.

On days when the air quality index is high, residents are advised to limit time outdoors, wear a mask that fits well, and avoid strenuous activity outside. Schools and workplaces in hotspot areas should also watch local readings rather than relying on a city-wide average, since levels can vary sharply from one neighbourhood to another.

The department has not said how many anti-smog guns are in use or how long each deployment lasts. That detail matters for residents who want to know whether their area will be covered, and the department should publish hotspot readings alongside deployment locations so the public can judge whether the machines are reaching the worst-affected streets.

Frequently asked questions

What are anti-smog guns?

They are machines that spray a fine mist of water to settle dust and coarse particles at street level, reducing the amount of airborne dust people breathe in.

Where are they being used in Lahore?

At pollution hotspots identified through monitoring readings and ground conditions, with priority given to areas recording higher PM10 levels.

Do anti-smog guns solve Lahore’s smog problem?

Why is Lahore’s air so bad at this time of year?
