Balochistan Assembly Demands Recovery of 14-Year-Old Hindu Girl Taken from Sibi

Members of the Balochistan Assembly on Monday demanded the immediate recovery of a 14-year-old Hindu girl reportedly taken from Sibi a few days ago, and urged action against the man accused of abducting her. The demand united treasury and opposition benches in Quetta.

MPAs raise the case on the floor

Dr Ashok Kumar, a PML-N minority member, raised the matter during the session. He told the house that the girl had reportedly been taken from Sibi and shifted to Sindh, where she was allegedly forced into marriage and religious conversion.

He urged the provincial government to contact its Sindh counterpart without delay and to ensure the girl’s safe recovery.

Parliamentary Secretary for Religious Affairs Sanjay Kumar of the PPP gave more details to the house. He said a man had allegedly abducted the girl, a ninth-grade student, and taken her to Sindh.

Sanjay Kumar said the girl’s mother was in an extremely poor condition and had reportedly remained unconscious for four days. The family was appealing for the girl’s immediate return, he told the members.

According to him, the girl’s religion had been forcibly changed. Questions had also been raised about the legal validity of the marriage registration document, he said. He closed by calling for an immediate investigation, the girl’s safe recovery and justice for her family.

Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai presided over the session. He sought a report from the Sindh government on the alleged abduction, forced marriage and conversion of the girl.

Home minister assures the house

Former chief minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch condemned the reported incident. He stressed that all minority communities in Balochistan were entitled to equal rights.

Home Minister Ziaullah Langove assured the house that the government had taken notice of the matter. He said it would contact the Sindh government, and that a report would be presented to the assembly after consultations with the relevant authorities.

Balochistan assembly Hindu girl recovery: why Sindh matters

The case crosses a provincial boundary, and that shapes everything that follows. The girl was reportedly taken from Sibi in Balochistan to Sindh, so her recovery now depends on coordination between the two provincial governments.

That is why the speaker asked Sindh for a report, and why the home minister promised to contact his counterpart there. Without that cooperation, neither provincial force can finish the task alone.

The case also tests the legal safeguards around underage marriage. Sindh’s child marriage law sets 18 as the minimum age for marriage, which puts the reported marriage of a 14-year-old in serious doubt. Balochistan’s capital has also seen wider security and policing reforms this month, including the plan for 2,900 surveillance cameras across Quetta, while provincial politics remains active, with the National Party backing protesting doctors in Balochistan. The full account of the assembly proceedings was first reported by Dawn.

Other business in the house

Members also raised concerns over alleged irregularities and corruption in recruitment to government departments. They called for an investigation into merit-based hiring and accountability in provincial departments.

Opposition Leader Younus Aziz Zehri criticised treasury members for repeatedly airing their grievances during assembly sessions. He said the debate had continued for nearly an hour, leaving little room for opposition members and other representatives to speak.

He urged treasury members to take up their concerns with the chief minister, the cabinet and the relevant ministers instead. The exchange reflected the wider national political debate, including the centre’s warning about a possible emergency in KP.
