Devon Conway Ruled Out of India ODI Series
Devon Conway ruled out of the rest of New Zealand’s five-match one-day series against India after suffering concussion in a training-ground collision with team-mate Matt Henry.
New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Friday that the opener had been ruled out of the remaining one-day internationals. Left-handed batter Nick Kelly has been called up as his replacement.
The injury happened on Tuesday at Eden Park in Auckland, on the eve of the first one-day international. Conway and Henry, the fast bowler, collided while both went for the same catch during fielding practice.
Both players missed the series opener. Conway was taken to the emergency department of an Auckland hospital for assessment, while Henry was later cleared of concussion and is available for the second match.
Devon Conway ruled out after Eden Park collision
New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner called the incident a “nasty collision”.
An NZC statement said: “Devon Conway has been ruled out of the remaining ODIs against India after sustaining a concussion while fielding during training on Tuesday. Left-handed batter Nick Kelly, who was selected for ODIs four and five, will assemble with the squad today in Wellington to replace Conway.”
The timing is poor for the hosts. Conway is a key part of the top order, and New Zealand are already short of batters.
Kelly steps in as cover grows thin
Kelly was first named only for the fourth and fifth one-day internationals. He will now join the squad in Wellington ahead of the second match on Saturday.
His call-up is a late reward for a strong run of form. Kelly earned his first national central contract only in October, after three half-centuries in his previous four one-day internationals.
Auckland batter Dale Phillips replaces Kelly in the New Zealand A side for the third unofficial Test against India A in Lincoln, which starts on Saturday.
Conway’s absence adds to a growing injury list. New Zealand are already without Rachin Ravindra, who has a shoulder problem, and Mark Chapman, who is out with a hamstring injury. Tim Seifert stood in for Conway in the series opener.
New Zealand hope Conway will recover before the first of two Tests against India, which start in Wellington on November 19.
India lead the series
India won the rain-hit first one-day international in Auckland on Wednesday by five wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. The hosts lead the five-match series 1-0.
India also won the preceding T20 series 3-2.
The second one-day international takes place at Sky Stadium in Wellington on Saturday, November 7. New Zealand must win to keep the series alive after losing the opener.
Conway’s injury is the latest setback in a home series that has tested New Zealand’s depth. With two senior batters already out, the side will look to Kelly and Seifert to steady the top order in Wellington.
Pakistan’s own Test side is also reshaping its squad this month, with changes announced ahead of the Sri Lanka series. New Zealand face a similar test of depth as the series moves to Wellington.
