Jackson Brace Ends Manchester City’s Perfect Start

Nicolas Jackson scored twice as Aston Villa beat Premier League leaders Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday, ending City’s perfect start to the season. The Aston Villa Manchester City result was City’s first league defeat of the campaign, in their eighth match.

Villa struck early, lost the lead after half-time, and then struck again through Jackson to take all three points in front of their home crowd in Birmingham.

Jackson strikes early at Villa Park

Villa took the lead in the sixth minute. Marc Guehi lost control of the ball, taking a touch before it ricocheted off his other leg. John McGinn pounced on the loose ball and found Jackson, who slotted his finish into the bottom corner.

It was a dream start for the home side against a City team that had won every league match so far this season. Villa defended in numbers after the goal, and City soon began to control possession.

City, managed by Enzo Maresca, enjoyed 63 per cent possession in the match and attempted 15 shots, compared with Villa’s eight. City also had seven shots on target, while Villa had only two. Both of Villa’s shots on target were goals.

Haaland levels for City

City responded well after falling behind. They levelled in the 53rd minute, after winning a free kick that was played out wide to Iliman Ndiaye. Ndiaye sent a cross towards Erling Haaland, and the Norwegian striker rose highest to nod the ball down into the bottom corner.

For a time, it looked as if City would push on and take control of the match. Their pressure had grown through the second half, and Villa were forced deeper into their own half.

But Villa held their shape, and they found a second goal against the run of play. Ibrahim Mbaye burst down the right-hand side and cut the ball back for Jackson, who made no mistake with his finish in the 61st minute.

Jackson whipped his second goal under City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and into the back of the net. It proved to be the winning goal, as Villa saw out the remaining minutes to secure a famous home win.

Jackson calls it the most important win

Jackson spoke to TNT Sports after the match and called the win against City the most important one for Villa so far.

“It was incredible, we got the win which is the most important thing. Man City are a strong team, the league leaders. Hopefully now we forget about this one and focus on the next one,” Jackson said.

The result will give Villa a major lift, not only because they beat the leaders, but because they did it with such efficiency. Two shots on target, two goals, and three points against the strongest team in the league is a statement of intent.

For City, the defeat ends a run of seven straight league wins at the start of the season. Their 100 per cent record is gone, and the title race is now a little more open, with rivals able to close the gap in the coming weeks.

What the result means for the title race

City remain at the top of the table, but their lead is no longer built on a perfect record. Villa, meanwhile, have shown they can beat the best teams in the league at home, even when they have far less of the ball.

The match also underlined the value of a clinical striker. Jackson needed only two clear chances, and he took both. Haaland also scored, as he so often does, but City’s other chances did not produce a second goal.

Villa’s defensive work after going ahead for the second time was just as important as Jackson’s goals. They closed down City’s passing lanes, forced shots from distance, and kept their shape until the final whistle.

In other football news, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has raised concerns over Bukayo Saka’s quad injury, Jose Mourinho has returned for the Clasico showdown as Real Madrid target Barcelona, and Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated a disputed 982nd career goal in Al Nassr’s win. In domestic cricket, the Presidents Trophy final has been moved to Lahore Gymkhana.
