Taftan Trade Halt: FIA Shuts Immigration Gate

Cross-border trade between Pakistan and Iran stopped on Saturday at the Taftan crossing, after the Federal Investigation Agency closed its immigration gate there and the government withdrew a key import waiver. Traders now face the prospect of multi-million rupee losses, with no official word on when the crossing will reopen.

The shutdown followed instructions from senior officials in Islamabad, according to sources cited in the report. No official notification has explained the suspension, and authorities have given no timeline for reopening.

The waiver withdrawal that triggered the halt

The closure coincided with a regulatory step by the Ministry of Commerce. On Friday, the ministry issued office memorandum No. 9(3)/2017-IRAN, withdrawing its earlier order of October 3 that had extended the Electronic Import Form (EIF) waiver for imports from Iran. The memorandum took immediate effect.

Our earlier coverage reported that the ministry’s order, which also suspended trade through the Gabd-Rimdan corridor in Gwadar, gave no reason. The Saturday developments give that decision a physical face: the immigration gate at Taftan, a vital commercial artery between the two countries, is now shut.

Business community sounds the alarm

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Quetta Balochistan issued an urgent advisory to its members and the wider business community, recommending a temporary suspension of all new purchases, product bookings and trade commitments from Iran.

The chamber cautioned that proceeding with trade activities without regulatory clarity could result in severe customs clearance delays and financial distress for importers. It urged merchants to verify the legal status of EIF requirements directly with the Federal Board of Revenue, the Ministry of Commerce and border authorities before placing fresh orders.

The warning carries weight in a province where the border economy runs deep. Exporters have already warned that shipments are sluggish and policy uncertainty is hurting them. A closed Taftan adds another pressure point: the crossing handles regular consignments of fuel and food between the two neighbours, and disruptions there tend to filter through to prices. Our earlier report noted that traders and energy sources fear the closure could aggravate LPG shortages in Karachi and push up open-market prices.

Iran cites ‘technical issues’

Iran has responded with a measured public line. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, commenting on reports about the closure of the land border with Pakistan, said: “Due to certain technical issues and the need to take precautionary measures, border crossings and exchanges have been temporarily suspended.”

He added that the relevant authorities of the two countries were in close contact and holding consultations to resolve the issue as soon as possible and restore normal operations at the border crossings.

The episode sits against a wider strain. Islamabad and Tehran had spent much of the year formalising border trade, easing customs procedures and agreeing round-the-clock operations at the crossings, while the broader Iran standoff and the question of Hormuz reopening hung over the region. Pakistan has meanwhile played a recognised mediation role in the crisis, which makes the trade freeze an awkward parallel track.

What to watch next

No government representative has publicly clarified the policy posture, and local business leaders have stressed that a swift resolution and a clear policy framework are essential to protect commercial interests.

For now, the traders’ position is simple: hold off on new orders, get written clarity on the EIF rules, and wait. Whether the consultations Baghaei mentioned can restore operations quickly will decide if this becomes a short disruption or a longer, costlier freeze.

Why did trade stop at Taftan?

The FIA immigration gate at Taftan was closed on Saturday on instructions from senior officials in Islamabad, and the Ministry of Commerce withdrew the EIF import waiver for Iranian goods a day earlier. No official reason has been published.

Has a reopening date been announced?

No. Authorities have not issued a notification explaining the suspension or providing a timeline for reopening. Iran’s foreign ministry says both sides are in contact to restore operations as soon as possible.

What should traders do meanwhile?

The Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry advises suspending new purchases, bookings and trade commitments from Iran, and verifying EIF requirements with the FBR, the Ministry of Commerce and border authorities before placing orders.
