President Zardari Receives Credentials of French, Saudi Ambassadors-Designate
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday received the credentials of the newly appointed ambassadors of France and Saudi Arabia during separate ceremonies held at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad.
The president welcomed Jean-Noel Poirier, ambassador-designate of France, and Dr Rajeh Tami Albugamy, ambassador-designate of Saudi Arabia, and congratulated them on their appointments. He expressed confidence that both diplomats would play an important role in strengthening Pakistan’s relations with their countries and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Zardari French Saudi ambassadors credentials ceremony: France ties in focus
During his meeting with the French envoy, President Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to deepening its longstanding ties with France through regular dialogue and broader bilateral cooperation. He stressed the importance of multilateralism, high-level exchanges and an independent and constructive bilateral relationship.
The president highlighted the potential for greater collaboration in trade, investment, parliamentary exchanges, education, culture and defence cooperation. The ceremony marked a fresh chapter in Pakistan-France engagement, with both sides signalling interest in widening the relationship beyond its traditional contours.
Makkah Alliance for Defence underlines Saudi meeting
In a separate meeting with the Saudi ambassador-designate, President Zardari underscored the close strategic partnership between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the kingdom’s security and defence, and emphasised the importance of institutional mechanisms and the Makkah Alliance for Defence in strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The president appreciated Saudi Arabia’s continued financial assistance and support through oil supply arrangements. He also acknowledged the valuable contribution of the Pakistani community residing in the kingdom, one of the largest Pakistani diasporas in the world, whose remittances remain a pillar of Pakistan’s foreign exchange earnings.
Zardari expressed confidence that Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relations would reach new heights during Ambassador Albugamy’s tenure.
Defence pact gives the ceremony added weight
The timing of the Saudi credentials ceremony carries added significance. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia formalised the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement earlier this year, and the pact has moved quickly to the centre of Pakistan’s foreign policy. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently met the Makkah Alliance secretary general to review defence cooperation, and Islamabad is now openly positioning itself as a guarantor of the kingdom’s security.
That commitment was on display again on Wednesday, when Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar called Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia totally unacceptable and reaffirmed Pakistan’s full solidarity with the kingdom under the Makkah agreement. The president’s remarks to the incoming Saudi envoy sit squarely in the same frame: the defence relationship is no longer ceremonial, it is operational.
The economic side matters too. Pakistan has been seeking a long-term Saudi oil facility to ease pressure on its import bill, and the president’s appreciation of Saudi financial assistance and oil supply arrangements signals that the economic track is advancing alongside the strategic one.
The ceremony unfolded against a turbulent domestic backdrop. Earlier in the day, the Senate endorsed the federal government’s imposition of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, completing parliamentary ratification of the October 11 move.
