Apple Testing 20-Inch Foldable iPad for 2028
Apple is reportedly testing a large foldable iPad with a display of up to 20 inches when unfolded, according to a new tipster report. The 20-inch foldable iPad would give users a laptop-sized screen that folds down into a more portable shape, but Apple has not confirmed the project.
Chinese tipster Kang is the source of the latest report, which lines up with earlier predictions from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that Apple could introduce its first foldable iPad around 2028. The report says Apple is experimenting with the design, not that a finished product is ready.
20-inch foldable iPad: what is reported
The device is expected to unfold to an 18- to 20-inch display. When folded, it would take on a more compact, notebook-like shape.
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has previously described Apple’s concept as resembling two iPad Pro tablets placed side by side. A key focus, according to the reports, is reducing the visibility of the crease where the screen folds, so the display looks like one smooth surface rather than two panels joined together.
On the supply side, Kuo has previously reported that the foldable iPad would use ultra-thin glass, with Corning expected to supply the glass exclusively. General Interface Solutions would handle glass cutting, edge treatment, quality inspection and packaging. The same suppliers are also linked to Apple’s wider foldable work, including a foldable iPhone.
First-year shipments, if the device reaches production, have been projected at a modest 500,000 to one million units. That figure reflects both the technical challenge of a large folding screen and the likely high price of such a device.
Huawei’s MateBook Fold shows the category already exists
Apple would not be first to this idea. Huawei updated its MateBook Fold in August 2026, and that device already offers an 18-inch dual-layer OLED screen. It runs on Huawei’s Kirin X90 Plus processor, measures 7.3 millimetres thick on one side when unfolded, and includes a built-in stand and stylus support.
The MateBook Fold starts at about $3,750, with colours including Sky White, Phantom Black and Streamer Gold. It is sold in China, with no announced sales in the United States, Britain or Europe.
The comparison matters because Huawei’s device proves a large folding screen can be built and sold, even at a high price. Whether Apple follows its cues is not settled by the reports.
What remains unconfirmed is almost everything a buyer would want to know: design, operating system, processor, battery life, price and release date. Until Apple says something, those details should be treated as speculation.
What it could mean for buyers in Pakistan
For buyers in Pakistan, a large foldable from Apple would arrive, if at all, as a premium import. Imported devices already carry duties and currency costs on top of their launch prices, and a first-generation foldable would likely sit at the top of that range. That is worth keeping in mind when reading shipment and price reports from other markets.
The wider device market is also getting dearer. Global PC sales fell 21 per cent in the third quarter of 2026 as laptop prices climbed, as covered in our report on global PC sales and rising laptop prices. A foldable iPad would enter that same pressured market, where buyers are already delaying upgrades.
At the same time, new phones keep reaching Pakistan, including the Samsung Galaxy M08 and F08 launch. Foldables are a different bet from a mainstream phone launch: they ask buyers to pay more for a new form factor, rather than for a better version of a familiar device. Telecom rules are also changing, with the PTA moving on scrapping the one-year telecom review limit, while technology jobs face pressure, as shown by 135,000 tech jobs cut so far in 2026.
The practical test will be software: a big screen only helps if apps and multitasking use the space well, and reports have not answered that question yet.
For now, the honest summary is short: a tipster says Apple is testing a giant foldable tablet, analysts point to 2028, and Huawei already sells something similar in China. Everything else is still to be confirmed.
