Neymar Two-Match Ban for Mouth-Covering Row

Neymar Two-Match Ban for Mouth-Covering Row

Neymar two-match ban has been handed down by Brazil’s sports tribunal after the Santos captain covered his mouth while arguing with an opponent during a league match. The ruling means Neymar will miss three Santos matches in total, and he is not expected to return to action until late November.

The incident took place during Saturday’s 1-1 Brazilian Serie A draw with Bahia. Neymar, 34, was sent off after an altercation with Bahia midfielder Rodrigo Nestor, and Brazil’s Superior Court of Sports Justice found him guilty of breaking the rule that forbids players from covering their mouths during on-field confrontations.

The rule is known as the Vinicius Jr rule. It takes its name from Neymar’s Brazil team-mate Vinicius Junior, who earlier this year accused an opponent of racially abusing him while the opponent covered his mouth with his jersey during a Champions League match. The rule exists so that referees and cameras can see what players say to each other, and so that abuse cannot be hidden behind a hand or a shirt.

The referee’s report also noted that Neymar, after being sent off, ran towards the visitors’ bench to confront his opponent and had to be restrained by team-mates. That detail added to the case against him, even though the ban itself rests on the mouth-covering breach.

Neymar two-match ban: why the tribunal acted

The tribunal’s job was narrow. It had to decide whether Neymar broke the mouth-covering rule, not whether he said anything abusive. On that question, the evidence was clear enough for a guilty verdict, and the tribunal settled on a two-match ban.

Neymar will serve that ban on top of a one-match ban for accumulated yellow cards. The yellow-card ban covered Wednesday’s league game against Palmeiras, after Neymar had collected three cautions. As a result, the two bans together keep him out for three matches, with a return expected only in late November.

Neymar and Santos can appeal the ruling on the mouth-covering breach. An appeal would not change the yellow-card ban, but it could reduce or remove the two extra matches if the tribunal accepts the club’s case. No appeal had been announced at the time of reporting.

The latest suspension comes three months after Neymar became the first player in Brazil’s top flight to be temporarily removed from the field under a new rule being tested in the league to curb time-wasting by goalkeepers. That earlier incident was separate from this case, but it adds to a pattern of disciplinary trouble in his return to Brazilian football.

What the ban means for Santos

Santos will feel the loss keenly. Neymar is the club’s captain and its most famous player, and his return to the club where he started his career was meant to lift the team on and off the pitch. Without him, Santos must find goals and leadership from elsewhere for the next three matches.

The timing is also awkward. The Brazilian season is in its final stretch, and every point matters for clubs fighting at both ends of the table. A three-match absence for a captain can change a team’s shape, its set pieces, and its confidence in tight games.

For Neymar himself, the ban is another setback in a career that has mixed brilliance with long spells on the sidelines. The former Brazil captain has spent much of recent years battling injuries, and this season was meant to be a fresh start back home. Instead, he will spend the next few weeks watching from the stands.

Feature Pakistan has covered football’s disciplinary rows before, including Real Madrid’s apology over the Mbappe remarks in China, where a club had to answer for a player’s words. The Neymar case is different, since it turns on a gesture rather than a comment, but it raises the same question: how much room should stars have when the cameras are watching.

Elsewhere in football this week, Thibaut Courtois missed El Clasico with flu, Tottenham beat Chelsea in the Premier League, and Arsenal beat Everton 2-0. Those results show a sport in full swing, and Santos will have to keep pace without their captain.
