Sergio Perez Extends Cadillac Deal Until 2029

Sergio Perez extends Cadillac deal until 2029

Sergio Perez has extended his contract with Cadillac until 2029, with the Mexican and his team announcing the news on Wednesday, ahead of his home grand prix this weekend.

The 36-year-old joined Cadillac this season, the American team’s first in Formula One, a year after being dropped by Red Bull. He had spent four seasons at Red Bull as team-mate to Dutch four-time world champion Max Verstappen.

A project he believed in

“Joining Cadillac from day one was a project I truly believed in, and extending my commitment feels like a natural continuation of this chapter,” Perez said.

“Building a Formula One team from the ground up takes time, relentless work and patience, but the progress we are making together is incredibly rewarding. There is still a lot of work ahead of us and I am fully committed for the next three years.”

The wording matters. Cadillac entered Formula One as a new team this season, which means every part of the operation, from the factory floor to race-day routines, had to be built from scratch. A driver who joined at the start carries knowledge of that build that a newcomer cannot replace quickly, and a three-year extension gives the team stability while it grows.

A difficult season so far

Perez is a six-time Grand Prix winner since making his Formula One debut in 2011, and he finished runner-up in the 2023 championship behind Verstappen. This season has been much harder.

He has scored no points in 18 races. His best results came at Silverstone, Barcelona and Baku, where he finished fourteenth each time. For a driver with his record, a season without a point underlines how steep the climb is for a new team in a field where the established outfits have years of car development behind them.

The 300th race at home

This weekend, Perez will contest his 300th Grand Prix at Mexico City’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Few drivers reach that mark, and doing it at home, in front of a crowd that has backed him for years, gives the weekend a weight beyond the points on offer.

He has been a home favourite for years, and the Mexican Grand Prix has long been one of the loudest stops on the calendar for a local driver. The contract announcement, made days before the race, turns the weekend into a celebration of his stay with the team rather than a question about his future.

A title weekend for someone else

The same weekend could also decide the drivers’ championship. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli needs only a top-nine finish in Mexico to become Formula One’s youngest champion, after winning the United States Grand Prix last Sunday. That subplot will dominate the headlines, but for Perez the weekend is personal: his 300th start, his home race, and now a confirmed future with Cadillac through to 2029.

What Cadillac gets from the extension

For Cadillac, the value of the deal goes beyond race results. A new team needs a driver who knows how the car behaves across a full season, who can feed back on development direction, and who can hold the project together in public when results are poor. Perez, with 300 Grands Prix behind him and four seasons at a championship-winning team, brings that experience.

There is also a commercial side. Perez is Mexico’s most successful Formula One driver, and the Mexican Grand Prix is one of the best-attended races of the year. Keeping a Mexican driver at the centre of an American team’s first Formula One project gives Cadillac a natural audience in two large markets, and the announcement timing, days before his home race, makes full use of that attention.

The results still have to come. No points in 18 races is a plain fact, and the next three years will be judged on whether Cadillac turns stability into points. But the extension removes one uncertainty: the team will not be searching for a lead driver while it tries to close the gap.
