Pakistan Tour

Pakistan tour — the definitive travel guide. Destinations, itineraries, the 2026 visa rules, costs, and the best time to go.

Quick answer: A Pakistan tour delivers the north’s mountains (Hunza, Skardu, K2), Mughal Lahore and 6 UNESCO sites at a fraction of typical travel costs. Best: April–October (north), November–March (south). 10 days: $800–1,500 mid-range. Visa: the free Visa Prior to Arrival was suspended on 1 January 2026 — apply for a paid e-Visa via visa.nadra.gov.pk.

Where to Go

Pakistan compresses an absurd range into one trip. The north is the headline: Hunza Valley (Baltit and Altit forts, Attabad Lake, Passu cones, Khunjerab Pass at 4,693m), Skardu (Shangrila, Shigar Fort, Deosai plains, the K2 base camp road), Naran–Kaghan and Swat–Kalam for greener, gentler valleys. Lahore is the cultural capital — Badshahi Mosque (1673), Lahore Fort, Shalimar Gardens, the Wagah border ceremony, Food Street. Islamabad is the calm gateway (Faisal Mosque, Margalla trails). Taxila and Mohenjo-daro (c. 2500 BCE) cover 5,000 years of history; Karachi adds the coast and Burns Road’s food. The full destination table is in our Pakistan tour pillar.

When to Go

North (Hunza, Skardu): April–October. Late March–April for apricot and cherry blossom; June–August for green valleys and open high passes; late September–October for the golden autumn — the photographers’ season. South (Karachi, Sindh): November–March — summer is a furnace. Lahore/Islamabad: October–March is glorious. Avoid the monsoon (July–August) in the mountains — landslides can close the Karakoram Highway for days. Winter (November–February) in the north is starkly beautiful but brutally cold, with many hotels closed.

Visa: The 2026 Rules

Read this before booking anything. Pakistan’s free Visa Prior to Arrival (VPA) — the scheme that gave 126 countries fee-free, fast-track entry from August 2024 — was suspended on 1 January 2026, without an official announcement. Travellers must now apply for a standard paid e-Visa through the Pakistan Online Visa System at visa.nadra.gov.pk before flying. Fees follow a reciprocal schedule (roughly USD 35 for EU nationals, USD 60 for US/UK/Canada), processing takes days rather than hours, and fees are non-refundable even if rejected. Apply at least 2–3 weeks before travel and get the documents right the first time. Planning the journey itself? See our trip to Pakistan guide.

What It Costs

Pakistan is one of the world’s great travel bargains. Good hotels: $30–80/night (the north’s best guesthouses are at the lower end); meals: $3–10; domestic flights: $50–100; a private 4×4 with driver in the north runs roughly $60–100/day split between travellers. A 10-day northern tour: $800–1,500 all-in mid-range — less if you bus it, more with luxury lodges. Cash is king outside the big cities; ATMs thin out north of Gilgit. For the local’s-eye view, see the Pakistani trip guide.
