Punjab Launches Pakistan’s First Electric Sweeper Truck

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has inaugurated Pakistan’s first fully electric sweeper truck, a new step in the province’s move towards cleaner municipal services.

The truck will work on Lahore Ring Road, where it will carry out cleaning and washing operations. It is also fitted with a water suction system that can remove accumulated water from road surfaces, a feature being introduced for the first time in Pakistan.

ProPakistani reported that the chief minister inspected the vehicle during the inauguration and received a briefing on its operational features.

What the electric sweeper truck can do

Officials said the electric sweeper can cover up to 70 kilometres on a single charge. It uses zero-emission technology and runs with minimal noise, which helps cut both air and noise pollution.

The truck is also expected to control road dust and improve overall cleaning efficiency on one of Lahore’s busiest roads. Its water suction system adds a second job to the vehicle: clearing standing water after rain, a recurring problem on the city’s roads.

Besides its environmental benefits, the vehicle is expected to cut fuel and maintenance costs sharply when compared with conventional diesel road-cleaning trucks. Electric motors have fewer moving parts than diesel engines, and charging costs less per kilometre than diesel.

Why Lahore, and why now

The launch comes as Lahore heads into the smog season, when dust and vehicle emissions combine with cold air to trap pollution over the city. Road dust is one of the contributors to the haze, and regular mechanical sweeping is one of the few direct ways a city can reduce it.

Lahore Ring Road carries heavy traffic every day, and its long, open stretches gather dust quickly. A sweeper that can also wash the surface and suck up standing water does more than a standard diesel sweeper, and it does it without adding exhaust fumes to the air it is meant to clean.

The initiative is part of Punjab’s wider effort to bring modern and sustainable road-cleaning solutions into municipal operations, and to make those operations more cost-effective over time.

Part of a wider electric push

The sweeper truck is not the only electric vehicle to reach Punjab’s roads this year. The government has announced a new auto policy aimed at cheaper vehicles and more electric models, with duties on imported and locally assembled vehicles set to fall year by year.

Smaller electric vehicles are also appearing. The Valore Quad, a compact electric vehicle for Pakistan, was launched this week, and Tesla has confirmed it will end Cybertruck production in 2027 as the global market shifts.

The sweeper truck shows the same shift reaching public services. Where electric vehicles were once only private cars, they are now cleaning trucks, and the savings come from the public budget rather than a private fuel bill.

Lahore’s waste and cleaning services have been under scrutiny this year. A special audit of the Lahore Waste Management Company was ordered in October, which makes the launch of new equipment a visible test of whether the system is improving.
