Russell Brand Guilty Verdict in UK Sex Case
A London jury has delivered a Russell Brand guilty verdict, convicting the comedian of rape and three sexual assaults. The 51-year-old was refused bail and will be sentenced on Monday, facing a lengthy prison term.
The jury reached its verdict on Thursday after a four-week trial, Dawn reported. Brand was convicted of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, for offences committed between 2004 and 2009. He was cleared of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Brand had denied all the charges and denied ever having non-consensual sex. He told the court the incidents, which dated back more than 20 years, had either been consensual or had been reinvented or re-imagined. He acknowledged a past of “reckless philandering and idiocy”, but said consent was fundamental.
Russell Brand guilty verdict: what the prosecution argued
Prosecutors told the jury that Brand was obsessed with sex and used women to satisfy his own desires. One victim said he had treated her “like an animal”. Senior Crown prosecutor David Roberts said outside court that the evidence showed Brand to be “a calculated sexual predator, using his growing fame and power to create situations in which he could pursue women sexually, regardless of what they wanted”.
Six women gave evidence, all entitled to lifelong anonymity, and none knew one another. They came forward after a television documentary and press reports in 2023.
The complainants described a sudden change in Brand’s demeanour during their encounters, saying he became wide-eyed and maniacal. One woman said he had grabbed her breasts less than a minute after meeting her at a party in a bar. Another, who described herself as a fan, said she had gone to his home for consensual sex, but he had then removed a condom and raped her.
His former personal assistant, Helen Berger, who worked for him from 2006 to 2007, said in a witness statement that he had “an insane sexual appetite”. Brand has spoken openly about his battles with drugs and sex addiction, including in his 2007 autobiography *My Booky Wook*.
Police expect more women to come forward
Detective Inspector Laura Nelson, who led the investigation, said she expected other women to come forward. “I think there are other victims out there and if they want to report that to us, then we will of course take it seriously,” she told Reuters.
Police also said Brand was still under investigation for two other alleged rapes, one involving a girl who was 16 at the time. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said he hoped the conviction sent a clear message. “No one is above the law, no matter how famous or powerful they may be,” he said.
From television star to online commentator
Brand rose to prominence in Britain by hosting a spin-off show to *Big Brother* on Channel 4. During the 2000s he became a regular fixture on television and radio, then went on to star in a number of Hollywood films. In 2010 he married US pop singer Katy Perry. The marriage ended after 14 months.
In later years Brand left mainstream television and built a large social media following as an anti-establishment commentator. He was baptised as a Christian in 2024, after the allegations first became public.
The case has again raised questions about how the entertainment industry handles complaints against its stars. Brand is one of the most prominent British celebrities convicted of sex offences in recent times. BBC newsreader Huw Edwards admitted making indecent pictures of children two years ago, and entertainer Rolf Harris was found guilty of assaulting young girls in 2014.
The case was heard in London, where a UK court this week also heard an appeal against the ban on Palestine Action. Britain has also tightened its immigration rules, raising the wait for permanent residency to up to 30 years. In the United States, a court has blocked a plan to deport Afghans.
