US Military Planner Fired in Latest Shake-Up

US military planner Lt Gen Brett Sylvia has been removed from his post as head of strategy, plans and policy on the Joint Staff, US media reported on Wednesday. The reported sacking is the latest senior ouster under President Donald Trump, and it comes as Washington is believed to be weighing fresh strikes against Iran.

The Joint Staff is the top Pentagon body that handles planning and other issues for the US armed forces. US outlets reported his removal citing unnamed sources, according to Dawn.

A spokesperson for the Joint Staff first issued a statement that appeared to confirm Sylvia’s departure. The statement was later withdrawn. The spokesperson then said: “Out of respect for the servicemember and the ongoing personnel process we will not comment further.”

No reason was given for Sylvia’s reported departure. His previous roles included leading the 101st Airborne Division, the US army’s air assault division, and heading a unit in Iraq.

US military planner removal fits a wider pattern

The removal fits a wider pattern since Trump returned to office early last year. The president has overseen a purge of top military personnel, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles “CQ” Brown, whom he fired without explanation in February 2025.

Other senior officers pushed out include the heads of the US Army, Navy and Coast Guard, the general who headed the National Security Agency, the vice chief of staff of the US Air Force, a Navy admiral assigned to Nato, and three top military lawyers.

Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth has insisted that the president is simply choosing the leaders he wants. Democratic lawmakers, however, have raised concerns about the potential politicisation of the traditionally neutral US military.

Hegseth said last month that the US had slashed the number of its generals and admirals by 20 per cent. He described the move as aimed at “accountability”. He also suggested that the cuts targeted officers who failed to get on board with his efforts to ensure the military is focused on war-fighting rather than the “woke” policies of previous administrations, describing the reductions as an “accomplishment”.

Why the timing matters for Pakistan

The reported sacking comes as Trump is believed to be weighing fresh strikes against Iran after the US midterm elections next Tuesday. Trump said last week: “We may do another little Epic Fury.” He was referring to US-Israeli attacks on Tehran in February that triggered the war. He did not give any indication on timing.

Neither the US nor Iran has engaged in major attacks on land-based targets since early September. Instead, the two sides have settled into a pattern of strikes on commercial ships.

For Pakistan, the timing of any fresh US-Iran confrontation would matter directly. Pakistan shares a border with Iran, and Gulf shipping lanes carry a large share of the region’s trade. Islamabad has spent recent weeks working a security dialogue with Tehran, as Pakistan brokers a Tehran security dialogue involving Saudi and Turkish officials. Pakistan has also watched the Strait of Hormuz closely after Iran said it intercepted a US drone near the strait, while a Houthi missile aimed at eastern Saudi Arabia was shot down this month.

A change at the top of US military planning, therefore, is not only a Washington personnel story. The person who leads strategy, plans and policy on the Joint Staff helps shape the options put before the president. When the question on the table is a possible new round of strikes, that job carries real weight for the whole region, including Pakistan. The region’s diplomacy has stayed busy through the tension, with Pakistan seeking more Saudi investment in key sectors.
