PSX Gains 1,456 Points in Fourth Straight Session

PSX gains 1,456 points in fourth straight session

The KSE-100 Index extended its winning streak to a fourth consecutive session on Thursday, closing over 167,190 points after gaining about 1,460 points. Roughly 366 million shares changed hands during the session.

The benchmark index closed at 167,193 points, gaining 1,456 points, or 0.88 percent, on the day. The market maintained its positive momentum, extending its winning streak to four consecutive sessions.

Sector-wise, commercial banks, fertilisers, investment banks, oil and gas, and refineries led the gains. FFC, ENGROH, HBL, MCB and UBL remained among the key contributors, according to Ahmed Sheraz of KASB KTrade.

Trading activity was concentrated in CNERGY, with 184 million shares, followed by KEL with 47 million, PTC with 15 million and BOP with 14 million.

Earnings drive the rally

Corporate earnings continue to drive market sentiment, with better-than-expected results supporting buying interest in heavyweight stocks. Following strong results from FFC and HUBC, PSO and Mari Energies also reported encouraging numbers.

That earnings thread matters. A rally built on reported profits rests on firmer ground than one built on rumour. PSO’s quarterly profit more than doubled in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, and Mari Energies reported a 39 percent rise in profit for the same quarter. Both results landed in the same week as the market’s fourth straight gain.

Meanwhile, Brent crude eased around 1 percent to near $114 a barrel, offering some relief on the energy import front. The market has largely absorbed the recent 50 basis point State Bank of Pakistan rate hike and rollover-related concerns.

What comes next

Going forward, some consolidation and profit-taking may emerge after four straight positive sessions, particularly on Friday. Market volumes and sustained buying in heavyweight stocks will be crucial in determining whether the bullish momentum continues.

For small investors, the pattern of the week carries a simple lesson. Four sessions of gains do not remove risk, and the same earnings season that lifted heavyweight stocks can also punish companies that miss expectations. The index level tells only part of the story: the volume leaders, led by CNERGY, show that much of the day’s trading sat in lower-priced stocks, where moves can reverse quickly.

The broader backdrop remains mixed. A rate hike already absorbed by the market, crude near $114 a barrel, and an earnings season still under way all point to a market that is moving on company results rather than on a single headline.
