Karachi Court Approves Iqrarul Hassan Bail Plea
A Karachi city court on Saturday approved the bail plea of media personality Iqrarul Hassan and ordered his release against surety bonds of Rs200,000. The Iqrarul Hassan bail order came in a case about harming the state and national integrity through anti-state content shared on social media.
Tribune reported that the court granted bail after the charge sheet in the case had already been submitted. Advocate Ahmad Masood told the court that Hassan’s mobile devices remained in custody. The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) told the court that no further investigation was required against Hassan. However, the forensic report on the case was still awaited.
The order changes Hassan’s custody position after weeks in the case. It does not end the proceedings.
What the FIR alleges
The case rests on a first information report (FIR) about Hassan’s personal social media accounts. According to the FIR, Hassan used his accounts on X, Instagram and Facebook to intentionally share false, fabricated, anti-state and defamatory content. The FIR says the object was to instigate the public against the state, its institutions and its functionaries.
In addition, the FIR says the posts portrayed the state, its institutions and its functionaries in a false and distorted manner, and represented lawful measures as controversial, with the intent to incite the public. It says Hassan instigated a substantial following through posts published openly, so they could reach people across Pakistan and abroad.
These are allegations in the FIR. They are not findings by a trial court. The bail order itself deals with Hassan’s release, not with the truth of the allegations.
How the Iqrarul Hassan bail case reached this point
Hassan’s wife, Farah Iqrar, told Tribune on October 12 that unidentified individuals posing as NCCIA officials had taken him from their home in Lahore’s Defence C area. She said between five and seven people, including women, arrived late on Sunday night. She alleged that they threatened to break down the door, entered the house, and forcibly took him from a room.
On October 13, Hassan was handed over to the NCCIA on a four-day physical remand. A Karachi court handed him to the agency on that remand after his detention in Lahore. On October 15, the District and Sessions Court East dismissed a petition challenging the physical remand. The defence had questioned the legality of the proceedings and argued that the case concerned digital and cyber matters. A day later, his physical remand was extended by two days.
His remand was then extended by two days as the investigation continued. Later, he was sent to jail on judicial remand in the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) case.
An earlier bail plea was rejected
The approval on Saturday follows an earlier setback for Hassan in the same NCCIA case. A Karachi court rejected his bail plea on October 22 in the cybercrime case registered by the agency. The Judicial Magistrate (East) dismissed the post-arrest bail application filed under Section 497 of the Criminal Procedure Code. At that stage, Hassan remained in judicial custody while the case proceeded.
That October 22 order concerned FIR No. 101/2026, registered at the NCCIA’s Cyber Crime Reporting Centre in Karachi, under Sections 9, 10, 20, 24 and 26-A of Peca, as amended in 2025. Those sections cover glorification of an offence, cyberterrorism, offences against dignity, cyberstalking and false or fake information.
The contrast matters. The October 22 rejection kept Hassan in custody at that time. The October 31 approval orders his release on surety bonds. The underlying case continues.
