Google Gemini Adds In-Chat File Editing for All Users

Google Gemini Adds In-Chat File Editing for All Users

Google has added Gemini file editing features, letting users create, preview, and edit documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, presentations, and code directly in the AI chatbot. The update removes the need to switch between Gemini and other apps to edit AI-generated files.

Google announced the features on October 29, 2026. The company confirmed that they are available to all Gemini users, including those without a paid subscription. The rollout covers countries and languages where Gemini is supported.

What Gemini file editing features do

Gemini now supports creating and editing several types of files. These include Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide presentations, PDFs, Markdown documents, TXT files, and code. Users can open supported files directly within their conversations and make changes without leaving Gemini.

Google has also introduced a full-screen editing mode for working on documents more easily. Instead of asking Gemini to regenerate an entire file, users can select a specific section and request changes. For example, a user can highlight a paragraph and ask Gemini to rewrite it, summarise information, or improve its wording. A user can also select a table and ask Gemini to convert the information into a graph.

PDFs and presentations

The new features also make it easier to work with PDFs. Users can ask Gemini to create a PDF document, review its contents, and make changes to specific sections. Google demonstrated it by turning handwritten lecture notes into a PDF study guide. Users can then edit the generated document, select sections for further changes, and ask questions about its contents.

The update also supports creating and refining presentations. Gemini can generate presentation content, show a preview of the slides, and make changes to their wording and structure before users open the file in Google Slides or download it. For spreadsheets, users can generate tables and organise data using text instructions.

What this changes for everyday work

The practical effect is fewer app switches. Until now, Gemini could generate a file, but detailed editing meant opening another application or using a Workspace integration. Now the editing step happens in the same conversation where the file was created.

The change also matters because it is free for all users. Earlier, advanced document tools often sat behind paid tiers. Google has made this round available without a subscription, which widens access for students and small businesses in Pakistan and elsewhere.

There is one limit to note. PDF previewing and editing work on both the Gemini website and mobile app. Editing other file types, including Docs, Sheets, presentations, Markdown, TXT, and code, is currently limited to the web version. Google has not announced when these features will reach mobile.

Part of a wider race

Google introduced file generation and downloading in Gemini earlier this year. That update let users create documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, and other files through text prompts and download them. However, users previously had to rely on separate applications or Google Workspace integrations for more detailed editing. The latest update closes that gap.

Google already offers AI-powered editing through its Workspace applications, including the Gemini sidebar in Google Docs. The new functionality brings similar capabilities into the main Gemini chat interface. Anthropic introduced similar features in Claude earlier this year, allowing users to generate and edit documents and presentations directly within conversations.
