Karachi Traffic Diversion Plan for Flyover Work
Karachi traffic police have announced a diversion plan for motorists as construction work begins on flyover projects covering Nishtar Road, Lalu Line, Garden Road and Aga Khan III Road.
The road from Goodluck Marriage Hall to Jaman Shah Mazar will remain closed from Saturday night. The closure affects a busy corridor used by commuters travelling between Lyari, Garden, Saddar and the city’s older neighbourhoods.
Traffic police officers and personnel will be deployed at all diversion points to guide commuters. The traffic police spokesperson has advised citizens to use the alternative routes and to follow the instructions of traffic personnel on the ground.
The closure
The closed stretch runs from Goodluck Marriage Hall to Jaman Shah Mazar. That single closure ripples across several nearby routes, because traffic that would normally pass through it must now use side streets and parallel roads.
The work forms part of flyover construction on four connected roads: Nishtar Road, Lalu Line, Garden Road and Aga Khan III Road. No reopening date was given in the announcement.
Alternative routes by starting point
The diversion plan is easiest to follow by starting point. The routes below are taken from the traffic police announcement.
| If you are coming from | Use this route |
|---|---|
| Pak Colony or Lyari Expressway | Orange Street, then De Silva Street to Nishtar Road, with a U-turn near Jaman Shah Mazar |
| Heading towards Saddar | Aga Khan III Road |
| Murad Khan Chowk, first option | Shalimar Street to Fawara Chowk, then Orange Street and Lalu Line Road to Manghopir Road |
| Murad Khan Chowk, second option | Garden Official Street towards Jilani Chowk and Dhobi Ghat |
| Heavy traffic from Bara Board | Nazimabad, Gulbahar and Lasbela |
| Heading towards Gurumandir or MA Jinnah Road | Alternative routes as directed by traffic personnel |
Two streets do much of the heavy lifting in this plan. Orange Street appears in more than one diversion, serving both Lyari Expressway traffic and traffic routed through Fawara Chowk. Garden Official Street provides the second way out of Murad Khan Chowk, towards Jilani Chowk and Dhobi Ghat.
Heavy traffic faces a wider diversion. Vehicles from Bara Board will be sent towards Nazimabad, Gulbahar and Lasbela, keeping larger vehicles off the narrower side streets around the closure.
What commuters should expect
Diversions of this kind tend to slow traffic most in the first few days, while drivers learn the new routes. The deployment of traffic personnel at diversion points should help, but commuters travelling through Garden, Lyari and Saddar should still allow extra time, especially during morning and evening peaks.
Drivers heading to Saddar have the simplest instruction: use Aga Khan III Road. Drivers coming from Pak Colony and the Lyari Expressway should plan for Orange Street and De Silva Street, and for the U-turn near Jaman Shah Mazar.
The announcement does not say how long the closure will last. Commuters who use this corridor daily should watch for updates from the traffic police, since flyover work on four roads is unlikely to finish in a single phase.
