BYD October EV Sales Beat Entire US Quarter

BYD October EV Sales Beat Entire US Quarter

BYD October EV sales set a new record, after the Chinese automaker sold more than 300,000 fully electric vehicles in a single month. That one-month total beat the number of electric vehicles sold across the entire United States during the third quarter of 2026.

According to BYD’s latest sales figures, the company sold 305,743 battery-electric passenger cars in October, an increase of 37 per cent compared with the same month last year. For comparison, the United States recorded 262,649 electric vehicle sales during July, August and September combined, according to Kelley Blue Book estimates. The gap is about 43,000 vehicles.

BYD October EV sales reach a new monthly high

BYD sold a total of 490,168 new energy vehicles in October, including fully electric cars, plug-in hybrids and commercial vehicles. The figure represents an 11 per cent increase from October 2025, and it is the company’s highest monthly sales total in 2026.

Fully electric passenger cars accounted for 305,743 of those sales, marking the first time BYD crossed the 300,000 mark in a single month. Electric cars made up about 63 per cent of the company’s passenger vehicle sales in October.

During the first 10 months of 2026, BYD sold about 1.95 million fully electric passenger cars, nearly 6 per cent more than during the same period last year. The result shows a clear shift in the company’s mix, since its plug-in hybrid business moved in the opposite direction.

The US comparison, in context

The United States figure needs a fair reading. According to Kelley Blue Book, Americans purchased 262,649 new electric vehicles in the third quarter of 2026, and that was the strongest quarterly performance for the US electric vehicle market in a year. Even so, the figure was still about 43,000 vehicles lower than BYD’s October sales alone.

US sales rose 6.1 per cent from the previous quarter but fell 39.5 per cent from a year earlier, and electric cars were about 6.4 per cent of new vehicle sales.

The comparison also has a limit that matters. BYD’s sales cover multiple international markets rather than China alone, while the US figure covers one national market. The gap still shows how much larger BYD’s electric vehicle business has become, but it is not a like-for-like contest between two car markets.

Hybrids fall as exports surge

While BYD’s fully electric vehicle sales reached a new record, demand for its plug-in hybrid models declined. The company sold 177,382 plug-in hybrid passenger cars in October, down about 17 per cent from the same month last year.

Through the first 10 months of 2026, BYD sold around 1.63 million plug-in hybrids, representing an 11 per cent annual decline. Despite the recent monthly growth, BYD’s overall vehicle sales for the first 10 months of 2026 remained slightly below last year’s levels. The company sold about 3.62 million vehicles during the period, down 2.2 per cent compared with 2025.

Exports tell a different story. BYD shipped 170,194 vehicles overseas in October, more than double the number shipped during the same month last year. International shipments accounted for about 35 per cent of BYD’s total vehicle sales during October. During the first 10 months of 2026, the company shipped more than 1.5 million vehicles to overseas markets.

BYD is expanding in Europe, Southeast Asia and South America as competition grows at home. The automaker is targeting about 2 million overseas shipments by the end of 2026, with expectations that the figure could exceed 2.5 million in 2027.

What it means for Pakistan

Pakistan is part of that export story, even if it is a small part of it. BYD already has a footprint in the country, as covered here: BYD Pakistan imports and Hubco plant. A stronger global BYD also matters for local buyers, since more export volume can mean more models and keener prices in markets like Pakistan.

The charging side matters just as much. Pakistan plans fast chargers along highways, as reported here: Pakistan EV fast chargers every 50km on highways by 2030. The policy frame for the sector is set out here: Auto Policy 2026-31 on exports, EVs and taxes.

For Pakistani buyers, the October record is a signal, not a promise. Whether it means cheaper, better-supported electric cars in Pakistan will depend on local assembly, charging and after-sales service, not on one record month abroad.
