Salik Maryam Row Deepens Over Legal Notice

Salik Maryam Row Deepens Over Legal Notice

The Salik Maryam row deepened on Wednesday, after Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain said he would give a proper response to the Rs5 billion defamation notice sent to him by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The notice followed his claim that large-scale financial corruption is taking place in Punjab, the country’s biggest province.

Salik spoke to reporters after a National Assembly session in Islamabad. He said he had heard about the legal notice. “God willing, we will give a proper response to it once we receive it,” he said.

What Salik said

Salik rejected the allegation that he recommended appointing an official of his choice as the deputy commissioner of Gujrat, his native district. Asked whether he had taken the matter up with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, he avoided a direct answer and said his party would respond to the legal notice.

He also addressed questions about his brother, Chaudhry Shafay Hussain, a minister in Maryam’s Punjab cabinet. Salik said his remarks were personal, and that he had not spoken to his brother either before or after the interview.

Asked about the evidence behind his allegations, Salik said Maryam herself had acknowledged a day earlier that corruption existed in Punjab. He did not present documents or figures to reporters.

What the Salik Maryam row is about

The dispute began with Salik’s public claim of massive financial corruption in Punjab. Maryam responded with a Rs5 billion defamation notice, which Feature Pakistan covered when it was sent. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif then questioned the claim, and Feature Pakistan reported his remarks as well.

The row matters beyond the two personalities because Salik’s PML-Q is a coalition partner of the ruling PML-N in both the Centre and Punjab. A public fight inside the ruling alliance, rather than between government and opposition, is what gives the exchange its political weight. The original defamation notice set out Maryam’s position, and Salik’s reply is the first time he has answered it directly.

Bukhari challenge and PML-Q reply

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari pressed Salik to answer the notice. She urged him to either present proof of corruption or tender an apology.

“You are a federal minister and part of the government. It does not suit you to make baseless allegations without evidence,” Bukhari said. She said Salik admitted a day earlier to recommending the appointment of the Gujrat deputy commissioner but was now backtracking on the statement. “Enjoy your status, but you cannot continue making allegations. This will not work,” she added. She also said Salik’s brother had rejected the allegations the previous day.

PML-Q Central Information Secretary Ghulam Mustafa Malik answered for the party. He said being part of the ruling coalition does not mean remaining silent over mistakes or possible irregularities in government affairs. He said attempts to divert attention from the actual questions by highlighting the Gujrat deputy commissioner appointment would not work.

“Political recommendations are one matter, while questions about the use of official aircraft and national resources are another. These questions remain unanswered. If public resources are used for personal purposes, questions will inevitably be raised,” Malik said.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Malik said the party had been publicly challenged and was now compelled to respond in kind. “We will present evidence of corruption, as the Maryam Nawaz government wants,” he said. He clarified that the party had not levelled any specific charge against Maryam herself, since Salik’s statement had been general in nature. He added that the Punjab information minister had been quick to jump into the controversy and target Salik, followed by the chief minister herself.

Asif strikes a softer note

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif struck a more conciliatory note on X. He said he held Salik and his family in high esteem but could not comprehend his allegation regarding corruption in Punjab. Asif said the only way to interpret Salik’s statement was to see it as a political move to create more space for his party in the Centre and Punjab by targeting Maryam’s government.

That reading points to the underlying tension: the PML-Q holds federal office and a Punjab cabinet seat through its alliance with the PML-N, yet its leaders are now publicly pressing corruption questions against the Punjab government.

What happens next

Three things will decide where the row goes: Salik’s formal response once he receives the notice, the evidence the PML-Q says it will present, and whether the dispute spills into parliamentary business, where the two parties must still work together.

Until evidence appears, the corruption claim remains an allegation. The Tribune report carries no ruling on the claim, and neither side has produced documents in public so far.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Maryam Nawaz send Salik a legal notice?

Maryam sent the Rs5 billion defamation notice after Salik claimed that massive financial corruption is taking place in Punjab. She sought a retraction or proof, and the notice set the stage for a legal contest over the claim.

What did Salik say in response?

Salik said he had heard about the notice and would give a proper response once he received it. He rejected the claim that he sought a deputy commissioner of his choice in Gujrat, and his party promised to present evidence of corruption.

What is the Gujrat deputy commissioner issue?

The Punjab government side says Salik recommended an official of his choice for the Gujrat post and later backtracked. Salik rejects that version. The appointment row has become a side argument, while the main dispute stays focused on the corruption claim.

Is the PML-Q in government with the PML-N?

Yes. The PML-Q is a coalition partner of the PML-N in both the Centre and Punjab, and Salik’s brother Shafay Hussain serves as a minister in Maryam’s Punjab cabinet. That shared government role is why the public exchange has drawn attention.
