Vance: Iran War Midterm Loss Cost Republicans

United States Vice President JD Vance has said the Iran war midterm loss cost his party control of Congress, in his bluntest break yet with the White House line.

Vance said on Wednesday that the Iran war had doomed Republicans in the midterms, distancing himself from the unpopular conflict ahead of a possible 2028 White House run. His remarks came in a lengthy post on X.

“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance wrote, referring to President Donald Trump. Trump had said the Iran war was “part of it” in explaining the result, while still defending the war as justified.

Vance went further. “If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest,” he wrote. He added: “But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there.”

Iran war midterm loss reshapes the 2028 race

The Democratic wave has raised questions over Vance’s previous status as frontrunner for the 2028 Republican nomination. He has not formally declared a run.

Vance has long criticised United States foreign intervention, and he was reportedly sceptical behind the scenes about the war Trump and Israel launched in late February.

Vance also acknowledged that voters who backed Trump and himself in 2024 had switched sides over the war and the economy. “The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026,” he wrote.

He said a pollster he respected showed the Iran war and the economy were key factors, along with a desire to “change our relationship to Israel”, a point that strikes at a central plank of Trump’s foreign policy.

Democrats press to end the war

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer said the Iran war “must end” and suggested the incoming majority could use control over government funding to press for that goal.

“This war must end. It must end,” Schumer told journalists. He later noted that the “power of the purse” is “one of the ways of deterring a president who does war without the consent of the American people”. In a separate clip, he said: “The American people don’t know what the heck we’re fighting for in Iran.”

The White House pushed back on Wednesday. Donald Trump is “still your president”, it said in a post on X featuring Trump looming over the Resolute Desk.

“PSA: TRUMP IS STILL YOUR PRESIDENT,” text superimposed on the image said. “Thank you for your attention to this matter,” the post added.

Democrats won both the House and the Senate on Tuesday, as Feature Pakistan reported in Democrats Win Congress in Midterm Sweep. That gives them the power to pass legislation, launch investigations into Trump’s administration and block his appointments.

The results reflected deep frustration over the cost of living, tariffs and the Iran war, which has sent prices soaring. Trump has threatened to use his veto power, raising questions over how much Democrats can achieve.

What the result means for Pakistan

The result also matters for Pakistan through oil prices. Investors weighed an end to the Iran war after the sweep, and crude fell below 100 dollars a barrel, Reuters reported. Brent fell 4.50 dollars, or 4.3 per cent, to 99.07 dollars, while United States West Texas Intermediate fell 4.13 dollars, or 4.3 per cent, to 92.02 dollars.

That matters for Pakistan because it imports most of its fuel, and world oil prices feed into the daily price mechanism. As Feature Pakistan reported in Petrol Cut to Rs362, Diesel to Rs387.81, petrol and diesel prices were already revised down for November 5, so a sustained fall in crude would ease pressure on that mechanism, while a fresh escalation would push the other way.

The war has already shaped the region for months, including strikes reported in US Strikes Hit Iran’s Qeshm Island. Oil markets have moved on every shift in the standoff, as Feature Pakistan reported in Oil Prices Fall as US-Iran Diplomacy Shifts. The midterm vote adds a new force: a Congress that may use its funding power to press for an end to the fighting.
