Good France Brings French Food Week to Karachi

French food is taking centre stage in Karachi this week as the Alliance Française de Karachi launches Good France Karachi, the 2026 edition of the French food celebration. The week-long event opened with a gala dinner at Avari Towers on Saturday and runs until 8 November.

Five Karachi restaurants have joined the celebration. Cote Rotie, PAUL Bakery and Cafe, Feyaa, Okra and Olive Tree Bistro will serve specially prepared French-inspired menus during French Gastronomy Week, from 1 to 8 November. The event is organised by the Alliance Française de Karachi with the support of the French Embassy in Pakistan.

Good France Karachi opens with a gala dinner

The celebration opened on 31 October with a gala dinner at Avari Towers. Visiting French chef Maxime Delaboudinière travelled from Paris to prepare a five-course meal for guests at the opening night. Delaboudinière brings close to two decades of experience in the restaurant trade and now serves as executive chef and director of Restaurant Duvin, a Parisian bistro. He has earlier led kitchens at several restaurants in the French capital.

Alliance Française de Karachi Director Emmanuel Breurec said the initiative goes beyond introducing French food to Pakistani diners. He said it also builds links between the two cultures, adding that what connects the two sides is a shared love of exchange. Breurec said every visiting artist or chef meets a Pakistani artist or chef, and both sides learn from each other.

The point matters for Karachi diners. A food week of this kind does more than put new dishes on a menu. It gives local chefs a chance to work with French methods, and it gives visitors a taste of how Karachi kitchens read those methods.

A French tradition with deep roots

Good France, known in French as Goût de France, was first launched in 2015 by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and chef Alain Ducasse. It is now an international initiative that celebrates French cuisine and its place in world food culture. In November 2010, French gastronomy was added by UNESCO to its lists of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.

French cooking has a long written history. In the 14th century, court chef Guillaume Tirel, known as Taillevent, wrote Le Viandier, one of the earliest collections of medieval French recipes. In the 17th and 18th centuries, chefs François Pierre La Varenne and Marie-Antoine Carême moved French cooking away from foreign influences, including Italian cooking, and shaped a style of its own.

Cheese and wine remain central to the cuisine, with many regional styles and strict rules on where a product may come from. In recent years, simpler dining, food trucks, vegetarian options and dishes from immigrant communities have all changed what French food looks like day to day.

What happens next in Karachi

The Karachi edition aims to bring that tradition closer to local audiences. From 1 to 8 November, the five partner restaurants will serve their French-inspired menus, giving diners a full week to try the celebration rather than a single night. The gala dinner may have opened the week, but the restaurant menus carry it into daily life in the city.
