Pakistan’s Total Border Length: Every Frontier with India, Afghanistan, Iran & China
Pakistan shares land borders with four countries — India, Afghanistan, Iran and China — totalling over 7,300 km. This guide measures each frontier, names each line, and puts the famous 3,323 km India border in context.
Quick answer: Pakistan’s land borders total ~7,367 km: India 3,323 km (Radcliffe Line/LoC/AGPL), Afghanistan 2,611 km (Durand Line, 1893), Iran ~909 km, China ~523 km. The India frontier is the longest — and the only one combining a settled border, a military line and a glacier front.
All four borders
- India: 3,323 km — Radcliffe Line, Working Boundary, LoC, AGPL. Details: border hub.
- Afghanistan: ~2,611 km — the Durand Line (1893). Pakistan has fenced most of it since 2017.
- Iran: ~909 km — from the Arabian Sea to the Afghan tri-junction; largely desert and mountain.
- China: ~523 km — the Khunjerab Pass sector, settled by the 1963 Sino-Pakistan boundary agreement.
- Total: ~7,367 km of land frontier.
The Durand Line
Drawn in 1893 between British India and Afghanistan by Sir Mortimer Durand, the ~2,611 km line became Pakistan’s western border in 1947 — a status Afghanistan has never formally accepted. It runs from the Arabian Sea coast (near Gwadar) through Balochistan and the former tribal areas to the Wakhan. Since 2017 Pakistan has fenced the line and built forts along it, transforming the once-open frontier.
The Iran border
The ~909 km Pakistan–Iran border runs from the coast near Gwadar through Balochistan’s deserts to the Koh-i-Malik Siah tri-junction with Afghanistan. Quieter than the eastern and western frontiers, its issues are smuggling (notably fuel) and Baloch militancy spilling across both sides — the two countries struck each other’s territory in January 2024 before rapidly de-escalating.
The China border
The ~523 km Sino-Pakistan boundary in Gilgit-Baltistan — settled by the 1963 agreement — is Pakistan’s only undisputed land border. The Khunjerab Pass (4,693 m) carries the Karakoram Highway and the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor’s land link; it closes in winter.
