PCB to Auction Signed Shaheen, Babar Shirts for Breast Cancer Treatment

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will auction signed shirts of captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and star batter Babar Azam to raise funds for breast cancer treatment. The Shaheen Babar breast cancer shirts auction forms part of a joint PCB and Pink Ribbon campaign to raise awareness and support women who cannot afford treatment.

The board announced the auction on Saturday in Lahore. It said the proceeds would be spent on the treatment of breast cancer patients, particularly women who are unable to bear the medical expenses linked to the disease.

Shaheen Babar breast cancer shirts: how the campaign works

As part of the campaign, the Pakistan men’s team will wear pink jerseys during their home ODI tri-series match against England at Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday. England players, match officials and commentators will also be invited to wear pink ribbons in support of the cause.

The stumps used during the fixture will carry pink branding, while breast cancer awareness messages and campaign visuals will appear on the stadium’s big screen and LED perimeter boards through the match. Commentators will also share awareness messages during the live broadcast.

The PCB said it would run digital and promotional activities in the build-up to the match, starting two hours before the first ball. The aim is to reach spectators in the ground and viewers at home with the same message: early detection, regular screening and timely treatment save lives.

Why Sunday’s match gives the campaign its biggest stage

Sunday’s game is no ordinary fixture for Pakistan. It is the tri-series decider against England in Lahore, a match Pakistan must win to reach the final on October 31. Pakistan eye the tri-series final as England face a must-win clash in Lahore, so the ground and the television audience are both set to be large.

That timing gives the pink campaign a wide audience at a moment when attention is already fixed on the team. Shaheen, who leads the side, has already backed his players in public ahead of the decider. Shaheen has backed Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman despite their struggles, and his signed shirt now carries a cause beyond the match itself.

The campaign also fits the wider cricket calendar. Pakistan A face India A on November 22 in the Asia Cup Rising Stars event, while Agha Salman has returned to Pakistan’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka series. The pink initiative, however, stands apart from results, since its proceeds go to patients rather than to the sport.

Pinktober and the message behind the shirts

The initiative is organised as part of Pinktober, the global breast cancer awareness campaign held in October each year. Its focus is early detection, regular screening and timely treatment, alongside greater awareness across the country.

To widen the effort, the PCB will also introduce limited-edition pink-themed merchandise, including travel polo shirts and fan shirts, through its official retail store and online platforms. Fans can therefore show support in the ground and beyond, while the auction itself targets funds for treatment.

For women who face a diagnosis without the means to pay for care, that distinction matters. Awareness alone does not pay for treatment, and the PCB has said plainly that auction proceeds will go to patients who cannot bear the cost.
