The federal government has announced the registration process for the Petrol Relief Scheme, giving eligible Pakistanis a clear way to claim cheaper fuel. The initiative aims to reduce the impact of rising petrol prices on low- and middle-income families.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication shared the registration details on September 13. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif introduced the scheme as the country faces pressure from rising oil prices in the international market.
Under the Petrol Relief Scheme, eligible citizens can save Rs100 on every liter of petrol within a fixed monthly limit. The government has mainly targeted motorcycle, rickshaw, Qingqi and small-car owners through this relief package.
Motorcycle and Qingqi owners can receive the discount on up to 20 liters of petrol each month. Therefore, an eligible owner could save up to Rs2,000 per month if they use the full allowance.
Meanwhile, owners of cars with engines of up to 800cc can claim discounted petrol on up to 30 liters every month. As a result, eligible small-car owners could save as much as Rs3,000 per month under the announced rate.
The government has introduced a digital verification system for the Petrol Relief Scheme. NADRA, telecom companies, provincial transport authorities and excise departments will verify applicant information.
The digital system will check vehicle details through provincial transport and excise records to ensure that only eligible vehicle owners receive the government subsidy.
Citizens must use a mobile SIM registered in their own name when they apply. They must send an SMS in the format specified by the government to complete their registration.
Applicants must include their CNIC number and vehicle registration number in the message. They must also provide the relevant provincial code and vehicle registration date.
After the system verifies the information, successful applicants will receive a confirmation message on their mobile phone. Therefore, applicants should provide accurate details that match official government records.
The Petrol Relief Scheme also requires registered users to obtain a token before buying subsidized petrol. Citizens must type TOK in an SMS and send it to 9771 before visiting a participating petrol station.
The system will then send a token to the registered mobile number. Customers can show this token at the petrol station and receive petrol at the discounted rate, up to their available monthly allowance.
However, users should request the token from the mobile number linked to their registration. This step can help the digital system identify the registered beneficiary and process the fuel discount correctly.
The government plans to launch subsidized petrol in Islamabad first. According to the announced schedule, eligible residents in the federal capital will start receiving relief overnight between Monday and Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the government plans to expand the facility across Pakistan overnight, between Wednesday and Thursday. Therefore, eligible citizens in other parts of the country should complete their registration and wait for the service to start in their area.
