Rasul University Mandi Bahauddin Opens

Rasul University Mandi Bahauddin opened after Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the new university along with development and beautification projects worth billions of rupees in Mandi Bahauddin. The university has been established at a cost of Rs9.79 billion, with its main academic buildings and student housing already complete.

Academic Blocks I and II and the Student Services Centre are finished. Four student hostels, a bachelor faculty hostel and 53 residential units are also complete. Work on the university library is expected to finish soon, which means the campus can start teaching while its library building is completed.

Rasul University Mandi Bahauddin: what the campus offers

A residential campus changes what a district university can do. Students from nearby towns can live on site instead of travelling each day, and faculty can live in the bachelor hostel and residential units. That structure suits Mandi Bahauddin, a district town where students have long relied on colleges and on universities in larger cities.

The chief minister also inaugurated two smaller projects in the same visit. The Sadar Bazaar beautification project, completed for Rs6.99 crore, restored the bazaar’s traditional entrance gate, laid tuff tiles, installed streetlights and added a fountain. The Old Grain Market rehabilitation and beautification project, completed for Rs9.70 crore, turned the site into a park with a memorial and modern facilities.

Maryam Nawaz also visited the memorial commemorating the 1849 Battle of Chillianwala. The battle, fought in January 1849 during the Second Anglo-Sikh War near the town of Chillianwala in what is now Mandi Bahauddin district, was one of the bloodiest engagements of that war. The memorial visit tied the day’s new projects to the district’s own history, and it gave the inauguration a local anchor beyond the ribbon-cutting.

Why the university matters for the district

New universities in district towns do two things at once. They keep local students closer to home, and they bring teaching jobs, construction work and student spending into the town. The completed hostels and residential units suggest the University of Rasul is planned as a full campus rather than a single teaching block, which should help it attract students from across the district.

At the same time, a campus is only as good as its teaching. The test for the University of Rasul will come when it announces its programmes, faculty and admission dates. Buildings alone do not make a university, and students and parents in Mandi Bahauddin will watch the academic side closely. Feature Pakistan has covered the chief minister’s other district projects, and the same question applies there: delivery matters more than announcements.
