Rupee Gains Against Dollar, Closes at Rs276.67

The rupee gains against dollar continued on Thursday, with the local currency closing at Rs276.67 after a rise of three paisas. It was the 277th consecutive day the rupee has closed higher against the dollar, a run that began on December 25, 2025.

Thursday’s rise was small, just 0.01 per cent, but it kept the streak alive. The dollar closed at Rs276.70 on Wednesday, and has edged down through the week.

Business Recorder reported the interbank bid at Rs276.67 and the offer at Rs276.87. In the open market, the Forex Association of Pakistan put the dollar’s buying rate at Rs277.30 and the selling rate at Rs279.55, a gap of more than two rupees.

The rupee also gained against most other major currencies on Thursday. It rose 18 paisas against the British pound and eight paisas against the euro. It gained two paisas against the Canadian dollar, and one paisa each against the UAE dirham and the Saudi riyal.

The Australian dollar was the exception. The rupee lost 35 paisas against it, the only major currency to strengthen against the local unit on the day.

The table shows a steady, narrow drift. The dollar has slipped by about five paisas across the four sessions, from Rs276.72 on Monday to Rs276.67 on Thursday.

What the trend shows

The rupee’s run has been long, but the daily moves have been tiny. A gain of three paisas on a rate of Rs276.67 is barely visible, and the currency has spent the past week moving within a few paisas of Rs276.70.

Feature Pakistan’s own coverage tracks that drift. The rupee ended last week at Rs276.75 against the dollar, and on Wednesday it gained on the dollar while falling against the pound and the euro. Thursday’s close of Rs276.67 is eight paisas stronger than the end of last week, a gain of less than 0.03 per cent across four sessions.

The broader market has been far more active. Gold has been volatile, and the gold price in Pakistan rose to Rs435,636 a tola on Thursday, up Rs9,600 in a day. Oil has moved the other way, with oil falling 7.5 per cent as gold rebounded earlier in the week. Against that background, the rupee’s slow grind stands out for its calm.

The State Bank governor says the economy is resilient, with reserves at $21.5 billion, a level that gives the central bank room to smooth sharp moves in the market.

What happens next

Banks and financial institutions will stay closed on Monday, November 9, for Iqbal Day, the State Bank has announced. Trading will resume on Tuesday, when the market will test whether the rupee’s long run of gains can stretch past 277 days.

The open market gap is worth watching. A selling rate of Rs279.55 against an interbank close of Rs276.67 leaves a spread of nearly three rupees, and importers and travellers pay the open market rate.
