Shaheen Afridi Climbs in ICC ODI Rankings

Pakistan captain Shaheen Afridi has moved into the top five of the ICC ODI rankings after a strong run in the recently concluded tri-series against England and Sri Lanka. The latest ICC ODI rankings place Afridi fifth among bowlers with 621 points, one place higher than his previous position.

Fakhar Zaman and Haris Rauf also climbed the charts after the tri-series. Zaman rose nine places among batters, while Rauf jumped five places among bowlers. The gains underline how much the home tri-series triumph has lifted Pakistan’s one-day standings.

ICC ODI rankings: bowlers

Afridi took 10 wickets in five matches during the tri-series at an economy rate of 5.18 runs per over. That return carried him past rivals into fifth place. Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan still leads the bowling list, followed by South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj in second and New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner in third.

Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed slipped one place to fourth with 642 points. Rauf, meanwhile, climbed to 24th with 540 points after taking seven wickets in five matches at an economy rate of 6.13. Naseem Shah dropped four places to 55th with 472 points, while Arafat Minhas slipped three places to 71st with 434 points. Mohammad Wasim fell four places to 85th, and Mohammad Nawaz dropped three places to 94th.

ICC ODI rankings: batters

Among batters, former Pakistan captain Babar Azam held ninth place with 661 points. Salman Ali Agha stayed 13th with 622 points. Zaman provided the biggest Pakistani gain in the batting list. He scored 127 runs off 99 balls, with 11 fours and six sixes, and climbed nine places to 37th with 548 points.

Mohammad Rizwan, who is currently out of Pakistan’s all-format squads, slipped two places to 44th with 532 points. Saim Ayub dropped four places to joint 68th with 468 points, while Shadab Khan fell one place to 93rd with 398 points. India captain Shubman Gill still leads the batting rankings with 841 points. New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell sits second, and India’s Virat Kohli holds third place.

ICC ODI rankings: all-rounders

Salman Ali Agha climbed three places to 13th among all-rounders with 189 points. Afridi also rose three places, to 16th with 175 points. Minhas made the biggest jump of any Pakistani player in this update, rising 36 places to 33rd with 143 points.

Naseem Shah slipped four places to 42nd in the all-rounders’ list. Abrar Ahmed dropped two places to 47th with 129 points, while Shadab Khan fell four places to 54th, level with Rauf. Saim Ayub slipped one place to 58th with 117 points, and Mohammad Nawaz dropped three places to 97th. Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai still tops the all-rounders’ rankings, followed by Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza in second and Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi in third.

Why the ODI gains differ from the T20I picture

The ODI update tells a different story from Pakistan’s recent T20I rankings. In the T20I list, Maaz Sadaqat shot up 187 places after his own breakout series, as reported in Maaz Sadaqat’s rise in the ICC T20I rankings. The ODI gains, by contrast, spread across the senior core of the side. Afridi, Zaman and Rauf all moved up together, which points to a team-wide tri-series performance rather than one player’s surge. Pakistan were also fined for a slow over-rate in the final, as covered in Pakistan’s slow over-rate fine in the tri-series final. Rankings, however, reward wickets and runs, and on that count the senior players delivered.

What to watch next

The next test for these rankings is consistency away from home. Afridi’s fifth place puts him back among the world’s leading one-day bowlers, but holding that spot will need regular wickets in the next series. Zaman’s return to form also gives Pakistan’s top order a lift, after a long spell in which his one-day numbers had slipped.

Rauf’s climb to 24th matters for squad balance too. A second pacer inside the top 25 gives Pakistan a genuine new-ball and death-overs pair with Afridi. If both men stay fit and keep taking wickets, Pakistan’s bowling attack will look far stronger in the next ICC update.
