PSL 12 Direct Signing Rule Stays in Place

PSL 12 Direct Signing Rule Stays in Place

PSL 12 direct signing rules will stay unchanged, after the Pakistan Super League administration rejected calls from some franchises to remove the eligibility condition for direct signings. The decision was taken at a workshop held on Thursday, 29 October 2026, attended by PSL administration officials and franchise representatives, sources told Geo Super.

Under the rule, a player qualifies for a direct signing only if he has missed the previous two seasons of the league. Some franchises asked for that condition to be removed during detailed discussions on the player auction, the tournament schedule, operations and direct signings. The PSL administration defended the requirement, arguing that it aimed to bring new players into the tournament through the direct signing process. The condition, and the 23 November deadline for direct signings, will therefore remain unchanged.

The workshop was the follow-up to the meeting previewed earlier in the week. Feature Pakistan had reported the PSL 12 workshop agenda, including auction rules and direct signings, when the meeting was announced. Thursday’s outcome answers the main question that preview raised: the eligibility rule survives, and franchises must work within it.

PSL 12 direct signing: what the rule means

The direct signing window allows each franchise to sign one marquee player directly, outside the auction, provided that player did not take part in PSL 10 or PSL 11. The Pakistan Cricket Board opened that window until 23 November, as part of the pre-season roadmap for the 12th edition.

The rule is designed to refresh the player pool. Without it, franchises could use direct signings to re-sign established stars who already played in recent seasons, and the direct signing route would add little that the auction does not already provide. With the rule in place, a direct signing must be a player who has been away from the league for two seasons, which pushes teams to look abroad, to returning names, or to players who have not featured in the PSL’s recent editions.

That logic was the administration’s case at the workshop, according to the sources. Franchises that wanted the condition removed did not win the argument, and no change was agreed. For team planners, the practical effect is clear: direct signing targets must pass the two-season test, and any player who played in PSL 10 or PSL 11 cannot be signed through this route.

Auction and retention dates also unchanged

No changes were agreed to the date of the player auction, which will take place on 23 January 2027, as per the schedule. A proposal to pull back the date for player retention was also pitched by some franchises, but the administration defended 13 January as the deadline. The administration emphasised that the retention date had been set in light of the National T20 tournament, so that franchises could assess cricketers’ performances in that event before making retention decisions.

Those dates sit inside a wider calendar that is already fixed. PSL 12 is scheduled to run from 18 March to 2 May 2027, with eight teams competing. The tournament window was confirmed last month following consultations with key stakeholders during the PSL Governing Council meeting held in London on 1 September 2026, attended by owners and representatives of all eight franchises.

The 12th edition builds on a landmark 11th season, which saw the league expand to eight teams and introduce its first player auction, replacing the traditional draft system.

What this means for franchises now

Franchises leave the workshop with three fixed points. First, direct signings must meet the two-season absence condition, and the window closes on 23 November. Second, retention decisions must be made by 13 January, after the National T20 tournament gives teams a final form guide. Third, the auction follows on 23 January, where the bulk of squad building will happen.

That sequence matters for planning. A team that spends its direct signing on a player who does not meet the condition would waste the slot, so scouting lists must be filtered first by eligibility and only then by form and price.
